Saint Louis at Rhode Island

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — The surging Rhode Island Rams will look to continue their dominant season when they host the struggling Saint Louis Billikens in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball matchup Sunday at the Ryan Center.

The Rams (20-2, 10-0 A-10) enter on a 12-game winning streak and sit atop the conference standings. Their formidable defense, allowing just 53.2 points per game in league play, will be tested by Saint Louis guard Zya Nugent. Nugent is coming off a 10-point effort in a lopsided loss to Richmond but has been a consistent performer, averaging 12.0 points and 7.4 rebounds over her last eight games.

Rhode Island counters with its own standout in guard Brooklyn Gray. She is averaging 13.6 points per game in conference action and is fresh off a 21-point performance in a win over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday. The Rams’ balanced attack and staunch defense have made them one of the nation’s most efficient teams.

Saint Louis (11-14, 4-7) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 92-44 defeat to the same Richmond team. The Billikens have shown flashes, including an overtime win at Fordham and a victory over Dayton this month, but have struggled with consistency. Containing Gray and the multifaceted Rhode Island offense will be their primary challenge.

The Rams won the season’s first meeting decisively, 73-61, in St. Louis on Dec. 30. Since that loss, Rhode Island has not been defeated.

Sunday’s contest tips off a critical final stretch for both teams. Saint Louis aims to climb the conference table and improve its seeding for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament, while Rhode Island continues its pursuit of a regular-season championship and potential NCAA Tournament bid.

The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EST start on Sunday, Feb. 8.
