UC Santa Barbara at UC Irvine
IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big West Conference women’s basketball showdown is set for Saturday when the UC Irvine Anteaters host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Bren Events Center.
Both teams enter the contest ranked among the conference’s top tier. UC Irvine (17-4 overall) holds one of the league’s best records, while UC Santa Barbara (15-5) looks to rebound from back-to-back narrow defeats.
The Anteaters, led by guard Jada Wynn, are coming off a 50-55 road loss at Hawaii on Jan. 29. Wynn scored 17 points in that game and has been a consistent force, averaging over 18 points in her last four contests. UC Irvine’s defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents to an average of 56.2 points during conference play.
The Gauchos have dropped two straight, including a 60-62 heartbreaker at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 31. In that loss, forward Olivia Bradley posted a standout line of 25 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Bradley has been prolific, scoring 20 or more points in three of her last six games. She will be central to UC Santa Barbara’s efforts to break its skid against a stout Irvine defense.
This matchup is the first of two regular-season meetings between the schools, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 28 in Santa Barbara. Saturday’s result will carry significant weight in the conference standings as the regular season enters its final month.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST at Bren Events Center.
