UC Irvine Women Dominate UC Santa Barbara in Defensive Showcase
IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Irvine women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, stifling UC Santa Barbara from the opening tip and cruising to a 63-41 victory in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters, improving to 19-4 overall and solidifying their hold atop the conference standings, held the Gauchos to a season-low in points and a frigid 28.3% shooting from the field. UC Santa Barbara, which entered the contest at 16-5, managed just 17 first-half points and never recovered, seeing its three-game winning streak snapped before a crowd of 722.
The game’s decisive stretch came early, as UC Irvine established a tone of defensive dominance that would last all afternoon. The Anteaters opened the game on a 6-0 run, with Shirel Nahum scoring the first basket on a pull-up jumper and Summah Hanson adding a putback layup. UC Santa Barbara’s offensive struggles were immediate and profound; the Gauchos committed two turnovers and missed their first four shots before Zoe Shaw finally connected on a 3-pointer more than three and a half minutes into the game.
That brief spark did nothing to ignite the Gauchos. UC Irvine’s defense, active and disruptive, forced UC Santa Barbara into a series of rushed shots and mistakes. The Anteaters closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run over the final 34 seconds, capped by a Hunter Hernandez driving layup and free throw, followed by a Shirel Nahum steal and coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer to take an 18-11 lead. The sequence epitomized the half, as the Anteaters converted Gaucho errors into easy points.
The second quarter was even more disastrous for the visitors. UC Santa Barbara’s offense completely ground to a halt, scoring only six points on 2-of-13 shooting. A nearly five-minute scoring drought allowed UC Irvine to extend its lead to 23-13. While the Anteaters were not shooting lights out themselves, their effort on the glass—they secured 11 offensive rebounds in the game to UC Santa Barbara’s four—created extra possessions that the Gauchos could not afford to give away. A late jumper by Jada Wynn and two free throws gave UC Irvine a 32-17 advantage at halftime, a margin that felt insurmountable given the Gauchos’ offensive woes.
Any hope of a UC Santa Barbara rally was extinguished in the third quarter. After the Gauchos cut the deficit to 13 points, UC Irvine responded with an 8-0 run, featuring a 3-pointer from Nahum and a layup from Hernandez, to push the lead to 45-26 with 1:24 left in the period. The Anteaters led 47-29 heading into the fourth.
The final period saw UC Irvine maintain its intensity, with reserves contributing to the final margin. Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe scored eight points, including a 3-pointer, and Daniela Falcon Hernandez also hit from deep in the closing minutes.
Hunter Hernandez led all scorers with 15 points for UC Irvine, while Shirel Nahum added 12 points, three assists and three steals. Summah Hanson provided a strong all-around game with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. For UC Santa Barbara, Júlia Puente-Valverde was the lone player to reach double figures, finishing with nine points. The Gauchos’ backcourt of Zoe Shaw and Jessica Grant combined to shoot 5-of-22 from the field.
The Anteaters’ defense was the overarching story, holding UC Santa Barbara to an offensive rating of just 61.9 points per 100 possessions. UC Irvine also won the turnover battle, committing only seven while forcing 12, and outscored the Gauchos 20-18 in the paint despite not relying on interior dominance.
With the win, UC Irvine maintains its position as the conference frontrunner, while UC Santa Barbara will look to regroup before hosting UC Riverside next Thursday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Santa Barbara on Feb. 28.
