North Carolina Central at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — The Norfolk State Spartans will look to solidify their position in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings when they host the North Carolina Central Eagles in a women’s basketball matchup on Saturday at Echols Hall.

Norfolk State (10-12) enters with a more favorable overall record than North Carolina Central (5-14) and will aim to complete a regular-season sweep. The Spartans dominated the first meeting, a 68-48 victory in Durham on Jan. 3.

The Spartans have shown recent consistency in conference play, winning three of their last four MEAC contests before a 68-59 loss at Howard on Jan. 31. A key factor will be the interior presence of Carmen Kweti. The forward is coming off a strong all-around performance against Howard, posting 12 points, six rebounds and five blocks. In the Jan. 24 win over Coppin State, she nearly recorded a triple-double with nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

North Carolina Central arrives with momentum from its highest-scoring output of the season, a 103-51 rout of non-conference foe William Peace on Tuesday. The Eagles’ offense runs through guard Aysia Hinton, who erupted for a career-high 36 points in that victory. Her scoring prowess will be central to any upset bid, though she was held to just eight minutes in the Eagles’ most recent MEAC win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday.

Despite the Eagles’ recent offensive outburst, they have struggled against MEAC competition, with their only two conference wins coming in the past week. Containing Kweti inside and finding consistent scoring beyond Hinton remain their primary challenges.

The game tips off at 4 p.m. EST on Saturday as both teams continue their push toward the conference tournament.
