Norfolk State Women Pull Away From North Carolina Central in MEAC Contest
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by defensive pressure and offensive inefficiency than fluid scoring, the Norfolk State Spartans used a dominant second quarter and a standout performance from Da’Brya Clark to pull away from the North Carolina Central Eagles for a 58-45 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Echols Hall.
A crowd of 642 watched as Norfolk State improved to 11-12 overall, while North Carolina Central fell to 5-15.
The contest was a stark contrast in offensive execution, with both teams struggling mightily from the field. North Carolina Central shot a frigid 23 percent, making just 14 of 61 attempts. Norfolk State was not much better, connecting on 17 of 54 shots for 31.5 percent. The difference, however, was stark at the free-throw line, where the Spartans capitalized on their opportunities, making 20 of 30, while the Eagles managed only 13 makes on 25 attempts.
Clark, a 5-foot-7 guard from Baltimore, was the engine for Norfolk State, delivering a game-high 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. She added three assists and two blocks, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Her ability to draw fouls and convert at the line, going 9-for-12, was a critical component in establishing and maintaining the Spartans’ lead.
The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, where Norfolk State seized control. After trailing 13-10 following the first period, the Spartans outscored the Eagles 17-10 in the second frame to take a 27-23 lead into halftime. This surge flipped the momentum entirely. Norfolk State extended its lead in the third quarter and never allowed North Carolina Central to mount a serious threat in the final period, holding the Eagles to just seven fourth-quarter points.
North Carolina Central was led by Aniya Finger, who posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan Callahan added 13 points and six rebounds, while Aysia Hinton contributed 11 points. The Eagles’ offense, however, was plagued by their shooting woes and 18 turnovers, which Norfolk State converted into 17 points.
Norfolk State received complementary contributions from Jasha Clinton, who had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, and Anjanae Richardson, who added 10 points and five rebounds. The Spartans’ defense, which registered 11 steals and six blocks, consistently disrupted the Eagles’ offensive sets.
The game was a rematch of a Jan. 3 meeting in Durham, which Norfolk State also won, 68-48. The Spartans have now won five of their last seven games. North Carolina Central, which had won two of its last three coming into the contest, sees its modest momentum halted.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Norfolk State entered the game with a 96.30 percent probability to win, a projection borne out by their defensive performance and ability to grind out a victory on a poor shooting afternoon for both sides.
North Carolina Central will look to rebound quickly, hosting Delaware State on Monday. Norfolk State’s next action is on the road at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday.
