Jacksonville Rallies Past Florida Gulf Coast in ASUN Women’s Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Priscilla Williams scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to power the Jacksonville Dolphins to an 81-70 victory over the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Alico Arena.

The Dolphins, who led for the final 38 minutes, improved to 15-7 overall. The Eagles fell to 11-12.

Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard from Houston, dominated from the opening tip, winning the jump ball and scoring the game’s first basket on a jump shot just 21 seconds in. She finished 12 of 22 from the floor, adding four assists and a block in 38 minutes of action. Her performance anchored a Jacksonville attack that overcame a subpar 26.1% shooting afternoon from three-point range by controlling the glass and forcing turnovers.

The most important stretch of the game came in the third quarter, where Jacksonville extended a narrow 35-31 halftime lead. The Dolphins outscored the Eagles 26-16 in the period, with Williams scoring 11 points. Her personal 5-0 run midway through the quarter, capped by a three-point play after a driving layup and free throw, pushed the Jacksonville lead to 54-45 and forced an Eagles timeout. Florida Gulf Coast never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Jacksonville’s defense was pivotal, generating 13 steals and forcing 19 Eagles turnovers, which the Dolphins converted into 23 points. The Dolphins also won the rebounding battle decisively, 45-34, including an 11-5 advantage on the offensive glass that led to 15 second-chance points.

Nay Staton led Florida Gulf Coast with 25 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Sinai Douglas added 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Eagles, who shot 44.8% from the field but were hampered by 12-of-22 shooting from the free-throw line.

Carmaya Bowman provided crucial support for Jacksonville with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Comari Mitchell and Makiya Miller also scored 10 points apiece for the Dolphins, with Miller adding three assists. Tatum Brown controlled the interior with 10 rebounds.

The game was a tale of efficiency, as Jacksonville scored 81 points on 83 possessions for an offensive rating of 97.1, while Florida Gulf Coast managed 70 points on 82 possessions for a rating of 84.9. The Eagles stayed close by matching Jacksonville’s 36 points in the paint and shooting a solid 42.9% from beyond the arc, but they were undone by the turnover disparity and Jacksonville’s work on the boards.

A crowd of 1,502 watched as Jacksonville secured its third consecutive conference victory. The Dolphins have now won four of their last five games. Florida Gulf Coast saw its two-game winning streak snapped.

Jacksonville next hosts Stetson on Thursday. Florida Gulf Coast travels to face North Florida on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Jacksonville on Feb. 21.

Entering the contest, statistical projections heavily favored the Eagles at home, giving them an 89.4% probability to win. Jacksonville’s performance, led by Williams’ standout game, defied those expectations.
