Long Leads Fresno State to Convincing Win Over Nevada

FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Emilia Long scored 23 points and Fresno State used a dominant first quarter to set the tone for a decisive 71-51 victory over Nevada in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Save Mart Center.

The Bulldogs, improving to 11-13 overall, opened the game on a 20-2 run and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire before a crowd of 3,812. The Wolf Pack, which fell to 7-16, was held to just seven points in the opening period and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to claw back from the early deficit.

Long, a 5-foot-9 guard from Port Angeles, Washington, was the catalyst, adding four assists and a block in 35 minutes. Her performance continued a strong stretch, coming off a 19-point effort in a win at San Jose State earlier in the week. She was supported by Jaisa Gamble, who added 15 points, and a balanced attack that saw Danae Powell score 14 and Morelia Chavez contribute 10.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably its start. Nevada’s Izzy Sullivan hit a 3-pointer on the game’s first possession, but it would be the Wolf Pack’s only field goal for nearly the entire first quarter. Over the next nine minutes, Fresno State unleashed a 20-0 run, fueled by defensive pressure and efficient offense. The Bulldogs forced six Nevada turnovers in the period, converting them into easy opportunities. Gamble scored six points during the surge, while Long and Chavez facilitated the offense. Nevada missed 10 consecutive shots and committed multiple turnovers before Imbie Jones’s jumper with 1:53 left in the quarter finally stopped the run, making it 20-5.

Fresno State’s offensive efficiency was stark. The Bulldogs shot 59 percent from the field, making 29 of 49 attempts, and outscored Nevada 42-28 in the paint. Their offensive rating of 106.4 points per 100 possessions dwarfed Nevada’s mark of 73.7. The Wolf Pack, meanwhile, struggled to find any consistent rhythm, shooting just 35 percent overall and committing 16 turnovers.

Nevada showed brief signs of life after halftime, outscoring Fresno State 20-19 in the third quarter. Skylar Durley, who led the Wolf Pack with 17 points, was active during the period, but every Nevada push was met with a timely response from the Bulldogs. Ahrray Young’s 3-pointer brought Nevada within 40-36 with 6:03 left in the third, but Fresno State answered with a 6-0 spurt to restore a double-digit cushion and effectively end the threat.

The Bulldogs sealed the win in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to as many as 22 points. Long was central to the closing effort, scoring nine points in the final period, including a 3-pointer and a pair of technical free throws.

Durley was the lone Nevada player to reach double figures. Makayla Carter added eight points off the bench for the Wolf Pack, which has now lost five of its last six games.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Fresno State, which defeated Nevada 54-44 in Reno on Jan. 17. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Fresno State entered the game with an 80.3 percent probability to win.

Fresno State will look to build on the win when it hosts Boise State on Wednesday. Nevada returns home to face Air Force, also on Wednesday.
