San Diego State at San Jose State
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A matchup of teams at opposite ends of the Mountain West standings unfolds Saturday when the San Diego State Aztecs visit the San Jose State Spartans in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game.
The Aztecs (17-4), among the conference leaders, look to rebound from a midweek non-conference stumble, a 57-44 loss at Grand Canyon on Wednesday. Prior to that, they had won seven straight, including a dominant 94-66 victory over these same Spartans just two weeks ago in San Diego.
San Jose State (3-20), mired near the bottom of the league, seeks any sign of momentum after a 79-50 home loss to Fresno State on Wednesday. Their lone win in the last 10 games was a 60-57 home victory over Nevada on Jan. 21.
A key player to watch for San Diego State is guard Naomi Panganiban, who has been a consistent offensive force. She scored 15 points in the loss to Grand Canyon and poured in 23 points in a narrow win at Utah State last month. In the Jan. 24 rout of San Jose State, she had 9 points in just 16 minutes.
The Spartans will rely on guard Maya Anderson, who leads the team in recent production. She scored 14 points against Fresno State and had 15 points in the win over Nevada. Anderson was held to 9 points in the first meeting with the Aztecs.
The game tips off at 2 p.m. PST at the Event Center. For San Diego State, it’s a chance to solidify its conference standing and avoid a letdown against a struggling opponent. For San Jose State, it represents an opportunity for a season-defining upset in front of their home crowd.
Based on the teams’ records and the 28-point margin in the prior meeting, the Aztecs enter as heavy favorites. However, the Spartans will hope the change of venue can spark a more competitive performance as they look to snap a five-game losing streak.
Following this game, San Diego State hosts Colorado State on Feb. 11, while San Jose State travels to face New Mexico on the same date.
