Aztecs Dominate Spartans in Mountain West Women’s Basketball Rout
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — The San Diego State Aztecs delivered a commanding wire-to-wire victory over the San Jose State Spartans, winning 81-52 in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Event Center.
From the opening tip, which San Diego State’s Kennedy Lee controlled, the Aztecs established a dominance that never wavered. They raced to a 21-10 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 39-22 by halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach early. The Aztecs’ offensive efficiency was the story, as they shot 54.2% from the field and committed only eight turnovers, while their defense held the Spartans to 37.5% shooting and forced 13 giveaways.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the first quarter, setting the tone for the lopsided affair. After San Jose State’s Amira Brown hit a 3-pointer to cut the early deficit to 4-3, San Diego State responded with a decisive 17-2 run over the next six minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense and balanced scoring. It began with a Bailey Barnhard turnaround jumper, included a 3-pointer from Lee, and featured a traditional three-point play from Nat Martinez. The Aztecs’ defense during this stretch forced four Spartan turnovers and held them to 1-for-7 shooting, transforming a one-point contest into a 21-5 lead. San Jose State never recovered, trailing by double digits for the final 32 minutes of the game.
San Diego State (18-4, 8-2 Mountain West) was led by a potent inside-outside combination. Kennedy Lee, a 6-foot guard from Louisville, Kentucky, scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding a block and five rebounds in just 17 minutes. Guard Naomi Panganiban provided 13 points and four assists, while Nat Martinez added 12 points and four assists. The Aztecs dominated inside, scoring 36 points in the paint compared to San Jose State’s 22, and capitalized on Spartan mistakes, scoring 15 points off turnovers.
San Jose State (3-21, 1-10) was led by Maya Anderson of Toronto, who scored 16 points. Katarina Anderson added 10 points, and Amira Brown also chipped in 10. The Spartans struggled to generate consistent offense, posting an offensive rating of 81.4 points per 100 possessions, a stark contrast to San Diego State’s mark of 119.6.
The victory allowed San Diego State to bounce back from a mid-week loss at Grand Canyon and maintain its position near the top of the conference standings. For San Jose State, the loss extended a difficult season, marking their 11th defeat in the last 12 games.
The Aztecs’ depth was on full display as 10 players scored, with Barnhard finishing with 11 points and Sofia Kelemeni of Kavala, Greece, contributing five points and two assists in eight minutes off the bench. San Diego State also excelled at the free-throw line, making 8 of 10 attempts, while San Jose State attempted only four, making two.
A crowd of 633 watched as the Aztecs methodically increased their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 31 points. The third quarter saw San Diego State put the game fully away with a 24-point period, and the fourth quarter served as extended playing time for reserves.
San Diego State will look to continue its strong conference play when it hosts Colorado State on Wednesday. San Jose State seeks to end its skid with a road game at New Mexico, also on Wednesday.
