Iowa State Holds Off Utah Rally for Big 12 Road Victory

SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — Audi Crooks scored 26 points and Iowa State used a dominant third-quarter surge to build an insurmountable lead before holding off a frantic Utah rally for a 79-72 victory in a Big 12 women’s basketball game Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

The Cyclones, who improved to 19-5 overall, outscored the Utes 30-18 in the pivotal third period to turn a five-point halftime advantage into a 17-point cushion entering the final quarter. Utah, which fell to 16-8, mounted a desperate comeback in the fourth, outscoring Iowa State 27-16, but could never close the gap to fewer than the final seven-point margin.

The game’s most critical sequence came in the third quarter. Leading 33-27 early in the period, Iowa State unleashed a 17-4 run over a span of just over four minutes. The burst was fueled by Crooks, the 6-foot-3 sophomore from Algona, Iowa, who scored nine points during the stretch, including a traditional three-point play. Sydney Harris capped the run with a 3-pointer off an assist from Arianna Jackson, pushing the Cyclones’ lead to 50-31 with 4:54 left in the quarter. Utah never recovered from that deficit despite its late push.

Crooks was efficient throughout, making 10 of her 18 field goal attempts and adding six free throws. She also contributed three assists in 29 minutes. Her interior presence was a constant challenge for Utah’s defense, which had no answer for her in the post during the game-deciding run.

Jada Williams provided crucial backcourt support for Iowa State, finishing with 14 points and a game-high seven assists. Sydney Harris added 12 points, all from beyond the arc, and Arianna Jackson also chipped in 12 points. The Cyclones shot 45.9% from the field and a solid 41.7% from 3-point range, making 10 of 24 attempts.

Utah was led by Reese Ross, who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Lani White added 19 points, including three 3-pointers, but the Utes struggled with their shooting overall. They hit just 38.1% from the field and 31.3% from deep, making 10 of 32. Utah also hurt itself at the free-throw line, converting only 14 of 23 attempts.

The Utes won the battle on the offensive glass, securing 11 rebounds to Iowa State’s four, but committed 16 turnovers, which the Cyclones converted into 10 points. Iowa State committed 15 turnovers but distributed the ball more effectively, tallying eight assists to Utah’s six.

The game began as a tight defensive affair, with Iowa State taking a 17-14 lead after the first quarter. The Cyclones extended their lead slightly to 33-27 by halftime before their explosive third quarter seemingly put the game out of reach. Utah’s fourth-quarter rally, led by White and Ross, made the final score respectable but never truly threatened Iowa State’s control.

A crowd of 3,170 watched the contest, which was part of the Big 12 conference schedule. Iowa State next travels to face BYU on Tuesday. Utah will head to Arizona State for its next game on Wednesday.
