Cowgirls Dominate Knights From Start in Big 12 Victory
STILLWATER, Okla. (Interstat) — The Oklahoma State Cowgirls, led by a commanding all-around performance from guard Jadyn Wooten, overwhelmed the UCF Knights from the opening tip and cruised to an 81-58 victory in a Big 12 Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The game was effectively decided in a dominant first half by the home team. Oklahoma State raced out to a 24-6 lead after the first quarter, capitalizing on a disastrous start by UCF. The Knights missed their first nine field goal attempts and committed five turnovers before finally scoring on a Savannah Scott tip-in with 5:37 remaining in the opening period. By that time, the Cowgirls had already built a 10-0 lead behind early baskets from Amari Whiting and Haleigh Timmer.
Oklahoma State’s offensive efficiency and defensive pressure were the defining themes. The Cowgirls scored 23 points off 19 UCF turnovers and shot 48.4% from the field for the game. Their ball movement, spearheaded by Wooten, generated higher-quality looks, as evidenced by their 9-for-25 shooting from three-point range compared to UCF’s frigid 3-for-19. The Knights, meanwhile, struggled to find any offensive rhythm, posting an offensive rating of just 72.7 points per 100 possessions.
Wooten, a 5-foot-6 guard from Overland Park, Kansas, was the engine for Oklahoma State. In 30 minutes, she tallied 14 points, six rebounds, and a game-high eight assists, orchestrating the offense and repeatedly breaking down the UCF defense. Her playmaking set the tone early, and she added three steals on the defensive end. Her performance continued a strong stretch of play, following a 16-point effort in a narrow loss at Arizona State earlier in the week.
The Cowgirls’ balance was on full display. Stailee Heard of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Amari Whiting from Burley, Idaho, led all scorers with 15 points, while Micah Gray of Oklahoma City added 12 points and five rebounds. Achol Akot, a 6-foot-1 forward from Ottawa, Canada, provided a significant spark off the bench with 12 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.
UCF, which fell to 10-13 overall and 2-10 in the Big 12, showed brief signs of life after the catastrophic first quarter. The Knights outscored Oklahoma State 22-17 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to as few as 13 points. A driving layup by Kristol Ayson with 46 seconds left in the third made it 64-58, but that was as close as the visitors would get.
The Knights were led by forward Mahogany Chandler-Roberts, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 39 minutes. Savannah Scott added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jacorriah Bracey also finished with 12 points. However, UCF’s backcourt was plagued by ball-handling issues, combining for 12 of the team’s 19 turnovers.
Any momentum UCF built in the third quarter was swiftly extinguished at the start of the fourth. Oklahoma State opened the final period with a quick jumper from Heard, assisted by Timmer, and then forced turnovers on UCF’s next two possessions. A driving layup by Akot, again assisted by Wooten, pushed the lead back to 20 points less than three minutes into the quarter, sealing the outcome.
The most important sequence of the game, however, belonged to the opening ten minutes. Oklahoma State’s immediate and aggressive defense disrupted every aspect of UCF’s offensive sets. The Knights’ first points in the paint did not come until the 5:37 mark of the first quarter, and their first assist was not recorded until there was 4:29 left in the period. By establishing a 24-6 lead after one quarter, the Cowgirls removed all doubt about the result, allowing them to manage the game comfortably over the final 30 minutes.
Attendance was 2,678 at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The victory improved No. 19-6 Oklahoma State’s conference record and kept them in the upper tier of the Big 12 standings. UCF, mired in a losing streak within the conference, will look to regroup on the road at West Virginia on Wednesday. Oklahoma State travels to face Kansas State on Tuesday.
