North Dakota State at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A Summit League women’s basketball matchup featuring teams at opposite ends of the standings unfolds Saturday when the surging North Dakota State Bison visit the struggling Omaha Mavericks.

The Bison (19-2), riding a 10-game winning streak, enter Baxter Arena as one of the nation’s hottest mid-major teams. Their dominance has been underscored by an average margin of victory of 32.8 points during the streak. Omaha (3-22) is looking to build on rare momentum after snapping a 10-game skid with a 58-54 home win over North Dakota on Thursday.

North Dakota State, which throttled Omaha 94-39 in Fargo on Jan. 10, is led by standout guard Marisa Frost. The sophomore is averaging 18.2 points per game during the win streak and is coming off a 29-point performance in a 74-49 rout of Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday. Her scoring prowess has been a constant for a balanced Bison offense that has surpassed 90 points four times this season.

The Mavericks will counter with forward Avril Smith, whose all-around play has been a bright spot. She averages a near double-double and is a formidable rim protector, recording four or more blocks in five of her last seven games. Smith posted 15 points and four blocks in the recent victory.

For Omaha, containing Frost and slowing the Bison’s high-octane offense is the paramount challenge. North Dakota State leads the conference in scoring and has held opponents to 56.2 points per game during its streak. The Mavericks, who rank last in the Summit in scoring offense, must find consistent production beyond Smith to keep pace.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CST Saturday at Baxter Arena. North Dakota State visits North Dakota on Feb. 15, while Omaha travels to Denver on Tuesday.
