North Dakota State Routs Omaha in Summit League Women’s Basketball

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The North Dakota State Bison delivered a performance of overwhelming dominance on Saturday, dismantling the Omaha Mavericks 102-51 in a Summit League women’s basketball contest at Baxter Arena. The 51-point margin of victory underscored a chasm in efficiency and execution between a conference heavyweight and a struggling opponent.

From the opening tip, which was won by North Dakota State’s Avery Koenen, the Bison imposed their will. They erupted for a 29-point first quarter, connecting on 11 of their first 14 field goal attempts while forcing five Omaha turnovers. The Mavericks, by contrast, managed just 11 points in the period, setting a tone of futility that would last the entire evening.

The most decisive phase of the game was unquestionably the opening ten minutes. North Dakota State’s early 18-0 run, fueled by a relentless inside attack and transition opportunities, effectively decided the contest before the first media timeout. Koenen, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Montevideo, Minnesota, was instrumental in the onslaught, scoring eight points, grabbing three rebounds, and blocking a shot in the first quarter alone. Her early turnaround jumper and a subsequent assist to Abby Krzewinski for a layup typified the Bison’s crisp, high-percentage offense.

Omaha never recovered. The Bison’s offensive rating of 141.7 points per 100 possessions was a model of ruthless efficiency, while the Mavericks labored to a rating of 71.3 on the same number of possessions. North Dakota State shot a scorching 62.3% from the field overall and made 8 of 15 from three-point range. They dominated the interior, outscoring Omaha 54-16 in the paint and outrebounding them 34-20.

Koenen finished as the game’s standout performer, compiling 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks in just 20 minutes of action. She was one of seven Bison players to score in double figures, highlighting the team’s depth and unselfish play. Karrington Asp added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Abby Krzewinski and Jocelyn Schiller each chipped in 16 points. Despite the gaudy point total, North Dakota State recorded only three assists as a team, a statistical anomaly pointing to the sheer volume of one-on-one scoring success against an overmatched defense.

For Omaha, which fell to 3-23 overall and 1-12 in Summit League play, Regan Juenemann led the way with 14 points. The Mavericks shot 33.3% from the field and committed 14 turnovers, which the Bison converted into 21 points. Avril Smith, a hometown product from Omaha, contributed six points and five rebounds in the loss.

The Bison, who have now won 20 of their 22 games this season and sit atop the Summit League standings, showcased why they are one of the nation’s most efficient offensive teams. The victory extended their winning streak to four games, all by margins of 25 points or more, following a 74-49 win at Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday.

The game played out largely as expected, with pregame analytics giving North Dakota State a 97.3% probability of victory. The Bison’s previous meeting this season on Jan. 10 resulted in a 94-39 win in Fargo.

A crowd of 1,062 at Baxter Arena witnessed the Bison’s methodical dissection. North Dakota State maintained its intensity throughout, scoring at least 20 points in each quarter and holding Omaha to single digits in the fourth.

North Dakota State will look to continue its commanding season on the road at North Dakota on Feb. 15. Omaha, still searching for answers, faces a quick turnaround with a trip to Denver scheduled for Tuesday.
