Dayton Holds Off La Salle for Atlantic 10 Road Win
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a grinding Atlantic 10 contest defined more by defensive stands than offensive artistry, the Dayton Flyers used a decisive third-quarter surge to secure a 68-60 victory over the La Salle Explorers in women’s basketball on Wednesday night at Tom Gola Arena.
The game, witnessed by an intimate crowd of 235, saw both teams enter and exit with identical 12-11 overall records, but it was Dayton which executed more effectively down the stretch to snap a two-game home losing skid.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the third quarter. Dayton entered the second half clinging to a narrow 26-25 lead after a dismal six-point second quarter. The Flyers promptly reignited, outscoring La Salle 21-16 in the period to establish a cushion they would not relinquish. The run was fueled by interior work from Molly O’Riordan and timely plays from Nayo Lear and Olivia Leung, turning a one-point edge into a 47-41 advantage heading to the final frame.
Dayton’s offense was inefficient but ultimately more productive than La Salle’s. The Flyers shot 42.1% from the field (24 of 57) and 40% from three-point range (6 of 15), but struggled profoundly at the free-throw line, converting only 14 of 26 attempts. La Salle countered with 35% shooting from the floor (21 of 60) and a frigid 15.4% from beyond the arc (2 of 13), while making 16 of 24 free throws.
The statistical story was one of defensive pressure and missed opportunities. La Salle’s Amiya Moses was a rim-protecting force, recording seven blocks to anchor an eight-block team effort. However, the Explorers could not capitalize on Dayton’s 15 turnovers, scoring only nine points off them, while Dayton managed just three points off 11 La Salle giveaways. The Flyers won the battle on the glass, particularly on the offensive end with 13 rebounds leading to second chances, and held a slim 32-30 edge in points in the paint.
Nicole Stephens led Dayton with 14 points and five assists in 35 minutes, providing steady backcourt leadership. She was supported by a trio of double-figure scorers: Molly O’Riordan of Barrington, Illinois, scored 16 points, Nayo Lear of South Holland, Illinois, added 14, and Olivia Leung of Calgary, Canada, chipped in 12 points and four assists.
La Salle was led by Ashleigh Connor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who posted a game-high 17 points along with five assists. Joan Quinn of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, contributed 13 points and three assists, but the Explorers’ offense often stalled, posting an offensive rating of 81.7 points per 100 possessions compared to Dayton’s 95.3.
The first half was a disjointed affair. Dayton raced to a 20-17 lead after one quarter behind early three-pointers from O’Riordan and Leung, but then went ice-cold in the second, mustering only six points. La Salle, however, could not take advantage, scoring just eight points in the quarter themselves, leaving the Flyers with a one-point halftime lead.
After Dayton’s third-quarter push, the fourth period became a game of attrition. La Salle trimmed the deficit to four points on several occasions, but each time Dayton answered. A crucial sequence came with under two minutes to play; after an Aryss Macktoon putback and free throw brought La Salle within 53-50, Dayton’ Nicole Stephens responded with a driving layup. Following a La Salle turnover, Stephens then drilled a critical three-pointer off a Leung assist with 2:34 remaining, pushing the lead back to eight points and effectively sealing the outcome.
The final minute was prolonged by a series of timeouts and fouls, with both teams combining to shoot 14 free throws in the last 15 seconds. Dayton’s Nayo Lear sank four straight in the final second to provide the final margin.
The win marked a bounce-back for Dayton after a home loss to George Washington last Sunday. La Salle saw a two-game winning streak end following a road victory at Duquesne.
Both teams continue Atlantic 10 play on Saturday. Dayton travels to face Saint Joseph’s, while La Salle remains at home to host Fordham.
