Preview: Fresno State at San Jose State Women’s Basketball
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Mountain West women’s basketball teams seeking to halt slides will meet Wednesday when the Fresno State Bulldogs visit the San Jose State Spartans.
The game at the Event Center tips off at 7 p.m. PST.
Fresno State (9-13 overall, 3-6 MW) enters on a four-game losing streak, most recently falling 61-56 to Air Force at home on Saturday. Despite the skid, the Bulldogs defeated San Jose State 67-52 in the teams’ first meeting this season on Jan. 7 in Fresno.
San Jose State (3-19, 1-8) has lost five of its last six, including a 96-62 road loss to Boise State on Saturday. The Spartans’ lone win in that stretch was a 60-57 home victory over Nevada on Jan. 21.
A key matchup will feature guards Danae Powell of Fresno State and Amira Brown of San Jose State. Powell, the Bulldogs’ leading scorer in conference play, averaged 17 points in two games last week, including 15 in the loss to Air Force. She scored 20 points in the January win over the Spartans.
Brown is coming off a 20-point performance at Boise State, her second 20-point game in Mountain West play this season. She was held to four points in the first meeting with Fresno State.
Fresno State has relied on a balanced attack behind Powell, with Jaisa Gamble (13 points) and Emilia Long (7 points, 3 assists) contributing in the recent loss. San Jose State’s Carla Fuster (12 points vs. Boise State) provides secondary scoring support for Brown.
The Bulldogs have struggled offensively during their losing streak, failing to reach 60 points in three of the four losses. San Jose State ranks last in the conference in scoring defense, allowing an average of 78.5 points per game in league play.
Wednesday’s contest is the first of two road games this week for Fresno State, which hosts Nevada on Saturday. San Jose State begins a two-game homestand, with San Diego State visiting on Saturday.
Historically, Fresno State has dominated the series, winning the last 12 meetings. San Jose State’s last victory over the Bulldogs was on Feb. 22, 2017.
