Boise State Rallies Past Nevada in Mountain West Women’s Basketball
RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — The Boise State women’s basketball team used a dominant second-half defensive performance to overcome an early deficit and secure a 70-61 road victory over Nevada in a Mountain West Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center.
A crowd of 5,888 saw the Broncos, who trailed by eight points at halftime, outscore the Wolf Pack 41-24 after the break. The turnaround was fueled by a stifling third quarter in which Boise State held Nevada to just 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting while forcing six turnovers.
The win improved Boise State to 18-5 overall and marked its second victory over Nevada this season, following a 74-62 decision in Boise on New Year’s Eve. Nevada fell to 7-15.
The game’s pivotal stretch began immediately after halftime. Trailing 37-29, Boise State opened the third quarter with increased defensive pressure, disrupting Nevada’s offensive flow. The Wolf Pack managed only one field goal in the first six and a half minutes of the period. Meanwhile, the Broncos methodically chipped away, with Libby Hutton and Natalie Pasco combining for nine points during a 15-4 run that gave Boise State a 44-41 lead it would not relinquish.
Hutton, a sophomore from Perth, Australia, led the Broncos with 16 points, six rebounds and a block in just 21 minutes of action. Her efficiency inside was crucial, as she made seven of her eight shot attempts, all near the basket. Mya Hansen added 12 points and four rebounds, while Pasco contributed 14 points, including three 3-pointers.
Nevada was led by a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds from guard Skylar Durley of Oklahoma City. She was instrumental in building the Wolf Pack’s first-half lead, scoring 13 points before the break. However, Durley also committed seven of Nevada’s 16 turnovers, several of which came during Boise State’s decisive second-half surge.
The Wolf Pack started strong, shooting 48 percent in the first half and taking a 37-29 lead into the locker room. They led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, capitalizing on a 12-2 run that included five points from Durley and a 3-pointer from Tahj-Monet Bloom.
Boise State’s comeback was built on taking better care of the ball and capitalizing on Nevada’s mistakes. After committing nine turnovers in the first half, the Broncos had just six after halftime. They also turned 16 Nevada turnovers into 22 points, compared to just 11 points off turnovers for the Wolf Pack.
While Nevada won the battle in the paint, 30-22, Boise State’s perimeter shooting and efficiency at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Broncos connected on 9 of 22 attempts from 3-point range, while Nevada made only 3 of 12. At the foul line, Boise State was 19 of 24, while Nevada was 14 of 16.
The Broncos also received key contributions from their bench. Tatum Thompson dished out a team-high four assists, and Emily Howard of Vancouver, Canada, provided a defensive presence with five rebounds and a block in 16 minutes.
For Nevada, Kendra Hicks added eight points and five rebounds, and Olivia Poulivaati scored six points with four rebounds off the bench.
The victory extends Boise State’s winning streak to three games as they continue a push near the top of the Mountain West standings. Nevada, struggling through a difficult season, has now lost four of its last five.
Boise State returns home to face New Mexico on Saturday. Nevada travels to face Fresno State, also on Saturday.
