Rhode Island Rallies Past Saint Joseph’s in Fourth Quarter
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Atlantic 10 clash that lived up to its billing, the Rhode Island Rams showcased their championship mettle with a dominant fourth-quarter performance to pull away from the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, 69-61, on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
The victory, secured before an announced crowd of 1,216, solidified Rhode Island’s position atop the conference, improving its impressive record to 20-2 overall. Saint Joseph’s, which had won three of its last four, fell to 15-7.
The game’s defining sequence arrived in the final period, a masterclass in execution and defensive resilience from the home team. Leading by a precarious 43-41 margin entering the fourth, the Rams unleashed a 26-point quarter, their highest of the game, while simultaneously clamping down on the Hawks’ offensive threats. A critical 8-0 run midway through the quarter, fueled by the relentless play of Brooklyn Gray and Vanessa Harris, stretched a two-point lead to 55-47 with just over five minutes remaining. Saint Joseph’s, which had fought to stay within striking distance behind the heroic efforts of Aleah Snead, could never recover.
Snead, a 5-foot-11 guard from Philadelphia, was spectacular in defeat, pouring in a game-high 24 points for the Hawks. Her backcourt mate, Gabby Casey of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, added 17 points. But their combined 41 points were ultimately neutralized by Rhode Island’s balanced and persistent attack.
The Rams were led by Gray, a 5-11 guard from Rockford, Illinois, who scored 21 points, including several crucial baskets during the decisive fourth-quarter surge. Harris, from Glenarden, Maryland, provided a vital spark off the bench with 13 points, a block, and a steal. The Rams’ interior defense, anchored by 6-1 forward Palmire Mbu of Lille, France, was a constant deterrent; Mbu finished with nine points and three blocks, altering countless other attempts.
The contest was a tense, back-and-forth affair for the first thirty minutes, featuring eight lead changes and five ties. Saint Joseph’s started strong, taking a 19-18 lead after a first quarter that saw both teams trade baskets. The Hawks’ offense then went cold in the second, managing only eight points as Rhode Island built a 28-27 halftime advantage.
The third quarter continued the theme of tight defense and narrow margins, with the Hawks closing the gap to two points heading into the final frame. However, the Rams’ depth and poise under pressure proved insurmountable. Key contributions came from throughout the roster: point guard Sophia Vital of Cambridge, Massachusetts, directed the offense with 11 points and three assists, while Ines Debroise of Paris, France, chipped in nine points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 77 seconds to seal the victory.
For Saint Joseph’s, Rhian Stokes of Ewing, New Jersey, facilitated the offense with five assists, and Kaylinn Bethea of Voorhees, New Jersey, provided nine points off the bench. But the Hawks were ultimately undone by Rhode Island’s superior closing ability, a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting this season on Dec. 3, which the Rams also won, 59-52.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably Rhode Island’s fourth-quarter response to Saint Joseph’s persistent challenge. With the outcome hanging in the balance, the Rams elevated their play on both ends, converting defensive stops into efficient offense. A pivotal moment came with 6:57 remaining and Rhode Island leading 50-47. The Rams forced a missed layup, secured the defensive rebound, and Gray finished a fast-break layup on the other end, igniting the crowd and the 8-0 run that effectively decided the contest. This burst, characterized by stifling defense and timely scoring, demonstrated the composure of a team with just two losses and transformed a nail-biter into a statement win.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Rhode Island entered the game with a 72.20 percent probability to win, a projection borne out by their clutch performance down the stretch.
Saint Joseph’s will look to rebound quickly, hosting Dayton on Saturday. Rhode Island, continuing its pursuit of an Atlantic 10 regular-season title, will prepare for a home contest against Saint Louis on Sunday.
