South Carolina Upstate at Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Two Big South women’s basketball teams seeking to halt extended losing streaks will meet Wednesday when Presbyterian hosts South Carolina Upstate at the Templeton Center.
The Spartans (6-17) have lost six consecutive games since their last victory, which came against these same Blue Hose on Jan. 14, a 58-38 decision in Spartanburg. Presbyterian (3-19) has dropped eight of its last nine, with its lone win in that span a 50-46 victory at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21.
South Carolina Upstate’s offense has struggled mightily during its skid, failing to reach 65 points in any of the six losses and being held to 29 points in a lopsided defeat to Radford on Jan. 28. The team will lean on guard Cassie Gallagher, who torched Presbyterian for 24 points in the first meeting. Gallagher is averaging 15.4 points over her last seven games, including a 20-point effort in a narrow loss to UNC Asheville.
Presbyterian’s offense has faced similar challenges, ranking near the bottom of the conference in scoring. Forward Aminata Tal provides a spark, coming off a 14-point, 4-rebound performance in a loss at High Point. Her production has been inconsistent, but she scored 18 points in the team’s last win.
Defense may dictate the tempo, as both teams average below 55 points per game. The Spartans will aim to replicate their defensive dominance from the January matchup, where they held Presbyterian to a season-low 38 points. The Blue Hose, meanwhile, will look to protect their home floor and find scoring beyond Tal, potentially from Ore Ogunwolere or rebounding force Krystal Haddock.
With both teams languishing near the bottom of the Big South standings, this contest represents a critical opportunity to build momentum for the final stretch of the regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for Wednesday night in Clinton.
