Saint Bonaventure Holds Off Davidson in Defensive Atlantic 10 Contest
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a grinding Atlantic 10 defensive battle, the Saint Bonaventure women’s basketball team used a decisive second-quarter surge and clutch late free throws to secure a 59-50 victory over Davidson on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
The Bonnies improved to 13-11 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 14-10. The result defied pregame projections, as statistical models heavily favored Davidson.
The game’s pivotal stretch came in the second quarter. After a tightly contested first period that ended with Saint Bonaventure holding a slim 14-16 lead, the Bonnies seized control with an 18-13 quarter. They opened the period on an 8-2 run, fueled by defensive pressure that forced Davidson into rushed shots and turnovers. Laycee Drake, a sophomore guard from Hancock, New York, was instrumental, scoring seven of her team-high 14 points in the frame, including a driving layup just before the halftime buzzer to give Saint Bonaventure a 32-29 lead it would not relinquish.
Davidson, which shot just 34.5% from the field for the game and a frigid 19.4% from three-point range, never found its offensive rhythm. The Wildcats relied heavily on the scoring of junior forward Charlise Dunn, who finished with a game-high 18 points and added two assists, a block and a steal in 38 minutes. Fellow Australian Katie Donovan contributed 13 points, but the rest of the Wildcats combined for only 19 points on 8-of-35 shooting.
Saint Bonaventure, meanwhile, spread its offense effectively. Beyond Drake’s 14, Mackenzie Pettinelli orchestrated the attack with eight points, three assists and three steals. The Bonnies’ frontcourt of Gabby Robinson Forde and Kylie Buckley each added eight points, with Robinson Forde pulling down six rebounds and blocking a shot.
The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with Saint Bonaventure outscoring Davidson 11-10 to maintain a 43-39 advantage entering the final period. The Wildcats made several pushes in the fourth, closing to within two points on multiple occasions, the last at 48-50 after a Candice Lienafa layup with just over seven minutes remaining.
Each time, however, the Bonnies had an answer. A key jump shot from Olivia DiFranco and a critical three-pointer from Kaylee Krysztof helped stretch the lead back to six. Davidson’s offensive struggles proved insurmountable down the stretch, as the team missed its final eight field goal attempts.
Saint Bonaventure sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final 15 seconds. After a series of Davidson fouls, Elyse MacDonough and Laycee Drake combined to hit three of four attempts to extend the lead to nine, putting the game out of reach.
Defense defined the evening. Saint Bonaventure held a significant edge in steals, 8-5, and forced 11 Davidson turnovers while committing 10 of its own. The Bonnies also out-assisted the Wildcats 8-5 and won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing six rebounds to Davidson’s three.
The announced attendance at the Reilly Center was 395. Both teams return to conference play on Saturday. Saint Bonaventure will host Duquesne, while Davidson returns home to face George Washington.
