Iowa State Upsets Texas Tech Behind Crooks’ Dominant Performance
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big 12 Conference clash, the Iowa State Cyclones delivered a statement victory on the road, dismantling the Texas Tech Lady Raiders 84-70 on Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena.
The game was decisively shaped by a dominant first-quarter performance from Iowa State, which set a commanding tone the Lady Raiders could never overcome. The Cyclones erupted for 26 points in the opening period, fueled by an unstoppable inside presence, while holding Texas Tech to 18. This early burst provided a cushion that Iowa State managed expertly for the remainder of the contest, never allowing the lead to dip below six points and answering every Texas Tech push with a critical basket.
The engine of Iowa State’s offense was sophomore center Audi Crooks of Algona, Iowa. The 6-foot-3 post player was a model of efficiency, scoring a game-high 33 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field in just 32 minutes. Her early work was particularly devastating, as she repeatedly scored in the paint to establish the Cyclones’ early advantage. Crooks also added nine rebounds and two assists, anchoring both ends of the floor.
While Crooks controlled the interior, guard Jada Williams orchestrated the offense. The Kansas City, Missouri, native played a game-high 39 minutes, contributing 15 points and dishing out nine assists, many of which found Crooks for easy finishes. Sydney Harris of Edwardsville, Illinois, provided crucial perimeter scoring with 13 points, including three three-pointers.
Texas Tech, which entered the game with a sterling 20-2 record, struggled to find consistent offense outside of bursts from its backcourt. Sidney Love of San Antonio led the Lady Raiders with 17 points and four assists, while backcourt mate Bailey Maupin of Gruver added 16 points. Snudda Collins of Brookhaven, Mississippi, also chipped in 16 points, but the team shot just 42.6% from the field and was hampered by 12 turnovers.
The Lady Raiders made several attempts to rally. They trimmed a 12-point first-quarter deficit to six late in the second quarter and again early in the third, but each time Iowa State responded. A key sequence came late in the third quarter after Texas Tech had closed to 49-47. The Cyclones answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Crooks layup, to push the lead back to nine and effectively blunt the home team’s momentum.
Iowa State’s offensive execution was superior throughout. The Cyclones shot 48.4% from the field and an efficient 46.7% from three-point range. They also won the battle on the glass, securing 13 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. Defensively, they limited Texas Tech to an offensive rating of 102.3 points per 100 possessions, well below the Lady Raiders’ season average.
The victory improved Iowa State to 17-5 overall and marked a significant rebound from a 28-point road loss at Oklahoma State in their previous conference outing. It also handed Texas Tech just its third loss of the season and its second in Big 12 play, both coming at home.
The loss overshadowed a strong defensive effort from Texas Tech’s front line, which recorded seven blocks, led by three from Sarengbe Sanogo of Paris, France. However, the Lady Raiders could not counter Iowa State’s efficient, inside-out attack.
A crowd of 5,216 watched as the Cyclones defied the pregame projections, which had favored Texas Tech by 6.5 points. The combined score of 154 points sailed over the posted over/under of 141.5.
Iowa State will look to build on this momentum when it hosts UCF on Saturday. Texas Tech, seeking to regain its footing, will face TCU at home on Sunday.
