George Washington Edges Saint Louis in Tight Atlantic 10 Contest

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense, missed opportunities, and a frantic final minute, the George Washington Revolutionaries edged the Saint Louis Billikens 64-62 in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball contest Wednesday night at Charles E. Smith Center.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 406, saw neither team lead by more than seven points and featured 35 combined turnovers and a decisive disparity at the free-throw line. George Washington’s 12-of-16 performance at the stripe ultimately provided the narrow margin of victory, while Saint Louis left points on the board, converting only 10 of 18 free throws.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 34 seconds with the Revolutionaries clinging to a 61-59 lead. Saint Louis’s Zya Nugent was fouled on a drive and went to the line for two shots with a chance to tie or take the lead. She missed the first attempt, then made the second to cut the deficit to 61-60.

On the ensuing possession, George Washington’s Sara Lewis delivered the decisive blow. The junior from Atlanta drove and finished a tough layup through contact with 34 seconds remaining, drawing a foul on Nugent in the process. Lewis completed the three-point play, sinking the free throw to push the lead to 64-60.

Saint Louis, which had battled back from a five-point deficit with under three minutes to play, had one final chance. After a timeout, the Billikens worked the ball to Nugent, whose driving layup attempt was off the mark with three seconds left. A scramble for the rebound resulted in a held ball, with the possession arrow favoring George Washington, sealing the victory for the home team.

The game was a defensive struggle from the outset. Saint Louis shot a respectable 49% from the field (25 of 51) and dominated points in the paint, 44-28, but was hampered by 19 turnovers and its poor free-throw shooting. George Washington countered by forcing those turnovers, converting them into 17 points, and hitting timely three-pointers, going 6 of 16 from beyond the arc.

Saint Louis center Alyssa Koerkenmeier was a force inside for the Billikens, scoring 19 points, blocking three shots, and grabbing four rebounds in 35 minutes. Nugent, a guard from Denison, Texas, led all Saint Louis scorers with 16 points, while Jahda Denis added 11. Alexia Nelson facilitated the offense with six assists.

For George Washington, balance was key. Gabby Reynolds of Holland, Michigan, led the way with 14 points. Lewis was instrumental down the stretch, finishing with 13 points, four assists, and a critical block. Kamari Sims added 10 points, and Tanah Becker contributed six points and relentless defensive energy.

The win improved George Washington’s record to 12-11 overall and provided a positive start to a tough stretch of conference play. The Revolutionaries had entered the game with a 59.2% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system. Saint Louis fell to 11-12, seeing a two-game win streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion.

The contest was a classic Atlantic 10 battle, where possessions were precious and execution in the final minutes was paramount. George Washington made one more play than Saint Louis, with Lewis’s and-one conversion in the lane standing as the defining moment in a game where every point was earned the hard way.
