UC Santa Barbara at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Thursday when the surging UC Santa Barbara Gauchos visit the struggling Cal Poly Mustangs in a Big West Conference women’s basketball matchup.

The Gauchos (13-3, 3-2 Big West) enter Robert Mott Gymnasium with one of the league’s best overall records, while the Mustangs (3-14, 1-4) seek to halt a difficult start to the season. The game is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2026.

UC Santa Barbara aims to rebound from a 67-50 road loss at Hawaii on Saturday, which snapped a three-game winning streak. Prior to that, the Gauchos showcased their offensive firepower in an 82-67 victory over Cal State Bakersfield.

A key figure for UCSB is guard Olivia Bradley, who has been a dynamic scorer. She erupted for 27 points in just 27 minutes against Bakersfield and followed that with 15 points in 10 minutes off the bench at Hawaii. Over her last five games, Bradley is averaging 15.8 points.

Cal Poly, meanwhile, is reeling from an 86-46 defeat at Hawaii last Thursday. It was the latest in a string of lopsided losses for the Mustangs, who have dropped five of their last six.

The bright spot for Cal Poly has been the consistent production of guard Vanessa McManus. She scored 22 points in the loss at Hawaii and delivered a 31-point performance in a 77-68 loss to Cal State Northridge on Jan. 8. McManus has scored in double figures in six consecutive games, averaging 17.8 points over that stretch.

The matchup pits UCSB’s balanced attack, which features secondary scorers like Zoe Shaw and Chauncey Andersen, against a Cal Poly team heavily reliant on McManus. The Gauchos won both meetings last season by an average of 22.5 points.

For Cal Poly, the contest opens a three-game homestand offering a chance to stabilize its season. For UC Santa Barbara, it is a critical opportunity to regain momentum before hosting Long Beach State on Saturday. The Gauchos’ conference title aspirations demand handling business against teams below them in the standings, making this a potential trap game if they overlook the home team.
