Gauchos Use Dominant Second Quarter to Top Mustangs in Big West Matchup
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — Zoe Borter scored 24 points and the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from Cal Poly for a 61-51 victory on Thursday night in a Big West Conference game at Robert Mott Gym.
The Gauchos, who entered the contest with an 83.8% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Mustangs fell to 3-15 and 1-5.
The game’s decisive stretch came in the second period. After a tightly contested first quarter that saw Cal Poly take a 16-15 lead behind 10 points from Dulci Vail, the UC Santa Barbara defense clamped down. The Gauchos held the Mustangs to just six points in the second quarter on 2-of-14 shooting from the floor while forcing six turnovers.
Offensively, UC Santa Barbara found its rhythm. Borter, a 6-foot sophomore from Beaverton, Oregon, ignited the run with a trio of three-pointers in the quarter. Her third long-range shot capped a 13-0 Gauchos run that turned a 19-16 edge into a 32-16 commanding lead with 3:43 remaining in the half. Cal Poly went scoreless for over six minutes during the span.
UC Santa Barbara took a 38-22 advantage into halftime, outscoring the Mustangs 23-6 in the period. The Gauchos shot 8 of 17 in the quarter while Cal Poly managed only eight field goal attempts due to the turnover woes.
Cal Poly showed resilience after the break, opening the third quarter with a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to 42-37. Katie Peiffer, who led the Mustangs with 15 points, hit two three-pointers during the surge, and an Arissa Garcia triple brought the home crowd to life.
The Gauchos steadied themselves, however, and never allowed Cal Poly to get within a single possession. A Borter hook shot stopped the bleeding, and UC Santa Barbara carried a 49-37 lead into the final quarter.
The Mustangs made one more push, closing to within 53-48 on an Avery Knapp layup with 3:38 to play. But the Gauchos responded with key defensive stops and clutch free throws down the stretch. Olivia Bradley and Zoe Shaw combined to hit four critical free throws in the final 12 seconds to seal the 10-point victory.
Borter’s 24 points came on 8-of-20 shooting, including 5 of 13 from beyond the arc. Shaw, a 5-7 guard from Melbourne, Australia, added 13 points for UC Santa Barbara. Bradley contributed six points, two assists and two blocks, while Jessica Grant anchored the defense with three assists, two blocks and two steals.
For Cal Poly, Vail finished with 14 points and Peiffer added 15. The Mustangs were plagued by poor shooting all night, finishing 17 of 57 from the field for 29.8%. They also committed 17 turnovers, which UC Santa Barbara converted into 15 points.
The Gauchos were not efficient offensively, shooting 41.2% overall and 24.2% from three-point range, but their defensive pressure and command of the second quarter proved sufficient. They also controlled the glass, outrebounding Cal Poly 44-35.
Attendance was 459 at the 3,032-seat Robert Mott Gym.
UC Santa Barbara will look to continue its strong season when it hosts Long Beach State on Saturday. Cal Poly travels to face Cal State Fullerton, also on Saturday.
