Cowgirls Outlast Jayhawks in High-Scoring Big 12 Road Win
LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big 12 Conference clash, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls weathered a dynamic scoring performance from Kansas’ Jaliya Davis to secure an 85-76 road victory over the Jayhawks on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
The game was ultimately decided by a decisive second-quarter surge from the Cowgirls, who turned a tight contest into a comfortable lead they would never relinquish. Trailing 21-20 after a back-and-forth opening period, Oklahoma State unleashed a 26-point offensive barrage in the second quarter, fueled by precision from beyond the arc and a disruptive defensive effort.
Oklahoma State’s Haleigh Timmer and Micah Gray were instrumental in the turnaround. Timmer connected on three 3-pointers in the quarter, part of her 18-point night, while Gray added five points during the run. The Cowgirls’ defense simultaneously tightened, forcing the Jayhawks into rushed shots and converting Kansas turnovers into transition opportunities. A critical sequence saw Stailee Heard steal the ball from Davis and find Timmer for a 3-pointer, capping a run that pushed the Oklahoma State lead to double digits. The Cowgirls entered halftime leading 46-40, having established a rhythm that Kansas struggled to counter.
The third quarter saw Oklahoma State extend its advantage by clamping down defensively, holding Kansas to just 14 points. The Cowgirls’ interior defense, led by Achol Akot’s two blocks in the period, contested nearly every Jayhawk attempt in the paint. While Davis continued to score for Kansas, the offensive support dwindled, allowing Oklahoma State to build a 64-54 lead heading into the final frame.
Kansas made a concerted effort to rally in the fourth quarter, primarily through the duo of Davis and S’Mya Nichols. The Jayhawks managed to trim the deficit to six points on multiple occasions, but each time Oklahoma State had an answer, often from Heard or Jadyn Wooten at the free-throw line. The Cowgirls’ remarkable efficiency from the charity stripe, making 20 of 22 attempts overall, served as a constant deterrent to any sustained Kansas comeback. In the final minutes, with Kansas forced to foul, Oklahoma State’s composure sealed the victory.
Davis was spectacular in defeat for Kansas, scoring a game-high 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. Nichols provided strong support with 23 points and a team-high six assists. However, the Jayhawks were hampered by 15 turnovers, which Oklahoma State converted into 14 points.
The Cowgirls showcased a balanced and efficient offensive attack. Heard led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, impacting the game on both ends. Timmer and Gray each contributed 18 points, while Wooten added 15 points and four assists. Oklahoma State shot a solid 47.5% from the field and an impressive 90.9% from the free-throw line.
Defensively, Oklahoma State’s presence at the rim was a defining factor, recording seven blocks compared to Kansas’ two. The Cowgirls also won the battle in bench scoring and points off turnovers, underlining a more complete team performance.
With the win, Oklahoma State improves to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, bouncing back from a loss to TCU in its previous conference outing. Kansas falls to 11-7 overall and 2-4 in league play, suffering its third consecutive conference defeat. The announced attendance at Allen Fieldhouse was 3,346.
Oklahoma State next hosts Iowa State on Sunday. Kansas faces a quick turnaround, traveling to face Arizona State on Saturday.
