UC San Diego Women Dominate Portland State in 30-Point Road Victory
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The UC San Diego Tritons delivered a commanding performance on the road Sunday, overwhelming the Portland State Vikings in a nonconference women’s basketball game at the Stott Center.
Fueled by a dominant first quarter and a balanced offensive attack, the Tritons secured a decisive victory. UC San Diego improved its season record to 4-4, while Portland State fell to 2-5.
The tone was set from the opening tip. UC San Diego’s Erin Condron won the jump ball, and just 16 seconds into the game, Sabrina Ma completed a three-point play after being fouled on a driving layup. This initiated a blistering 30-point quarter for the Tritons, who capitalized on early Portland State turnovers and missed shots to build a substantial lead they would never relinquish.
Ma, a guard from San Francisco, was the offensive catalyst for UC San Diego, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Her backcourt partner, Dymonique Maxie of Hayward, California, orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out 11 assists while adding five points. The Tritons’ offense flowed through its primary contributors, with Rosa Smith scoring 17 points and Condron adding 17 more, largely from close range.
The Tritons established their dominance in the paint early and never relented, outscoring the Vikings 48 to 18 near the basket. They also capitalized on Portland State’s mistakes, scoring 23 points off turnovers compared to just five for the home team.
After taking a 30-14 lead after one quarter, the Tritons saw their offensive pace slow in the second, scoring 15 points, but their defense remained stout, holding Portland State to just 11. The Vikings struggled to find consistent offense outside of Cici Ellington and Kyleigh Brown. Ellington, a forward from Portland, led her team with 20 points, while Brown, a guard from Silverton, Oregon, contributed 15.
Any hope of a Portland State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as UC San Diego reasserted its offensive firepower, pouring in 27 points. The Tritons’ lead ballooned, allowing them to comfortably manage the game through the final period in front of an announced crowd of 310.
The victory provided a positive rebound for UC San Diego, which was coming off a 50-67 loss at Washington just two days prior. For Portland State, the loss dampened the momentum from a 75-64 home win over San Jose State on Friday.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, UC San Diego was projected with an 84.30 percent probability to win, a forecast the Tritons fulfilled with a comprehensive team performance.
UC San Diego will look to build on this win when it returns home to face Long Beach State on Saturday, Dec. 6. Portland State’s next contest is at home against South Dakota on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
