Florida International at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Jacksonville Dolphins to an 80-69 victory over the Florida International Golden Panthers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
The game was a tale of two halves defined by a single, explosive quarter. After a tightly contested first period that saw Jacksonville leading 15-13, the Dolphins erupted for 31 points in the second quarter while holding Florida International to 21, establishing a commanding 46-34 halftime lead.
Jacksonville’s offense, however, went cold after the break, managing only seven points in the third quarter as Florida International clawed back with a 24-point period. The Golden Panthers’ run cut the deficit to a single point, but they could not complete the comeback. The Dolphins responded with a 27-point fourth quarter to secure the win and improve their season record to 3-1. Florida International fell to 1-3.
Rhema Collins led all scorers for Florida International, recording a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She was supported by Fantasia James and Denika Lightbourne, who each contributed 15 points.
Jacksonville’s attack was more balanced, led by Mychal White who scored 19 points and dished out six assists. Makiya Miller and Priscilla Williams each added 12 points for the Dolphins. Kimora Hester provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring all seven of her points in the fourth quarter to help stave off the Golden Panthers’ challenge.
The game was played before an announced attendance of 128. Jacksonville next hosts Ga. Southwestern on Tuesday, while Florida International returns home to face Maryland-Baltimore County next Friday.
