Butler Defeats Northern Kentucky in Women’s Basketball Matchup
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Butler Bulldogs used a dominant first half and a commanding performance in the paint to secure a 73-56 victory over the Northern Kentucky Norse in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at a sparsely attended Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Playing before a crowd of 1,111, the Bulldogs improved their record to 2-2 on the young season, while the Norse remained winless, falling to 0-4.
Butler seized control of the contest from the opening tip, establishing an early lead and never looking back. The Bulldogs outscored the Norse 18-8 in the first quarter and extended their advantage with a 22-point second quarter. By halftime, Butler had built a commanding 40-18 lead, a deficit from which Northern Kentucky could not recover.
The Norse showed signs of life after the break, outscoring Butler 19-16 in the third quarter and matching that total in the fourth, but the first-half gap proved insurmountable. The Bulldogs’ offensive efficiency was a key differentiator. Butler scored 73 points on 76 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 95.8. Northern Kentucky, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of just 73.3, scoring 56 points on the same number of possessions.
Butler’s offensive success was built on high-percentage shots. The Bulldogs shot a solid 52.7 percent from the floor, connecting on 29 of 55 attempts. Their most significant advantage came inside, where they outscored the Norse 46-20 in the paint. Northern Kentucky struggled with its shooting all afternoon, finishing 19 of 57 from the field for a 33.3 percent clip.
The Bulldogs also excelled at the free-throw line, making 10 of their 11 attempts. The Norse were less efficient, converting 14 of 22 from the charity stripe. From beyond the arc, both teams had modest outputs, with Butler making 5 of 17 and Northern Kentucky hitting 4 of 19.
Defensively, Butler forced 18 Norse turnovers and converted them into 15 points. The Bulldogs also recorded 12 steals, led by a collective effort. Northern Kentucky, despite forcing 20 Butler turnovers and scoring 18 points off them, could not capitalize enough to close the gap.
Butler’s victory was a balanced team effort, with several players making significant contributions. Mallory Miller, a 6-foot-4 forward from Aberdeen, South Dakota, was a force in her 24 minutes of action. She nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one block. Her presence in the paint was instrumental on both ends of the floor.
Lily Zeinstra, a 5-11 guard from Byron Center, Michigan, led all scorers with 14 points in a game-high 31 minutes. She also chipped in four rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Addison Baxter, a 5-9 guard from Larwill, Indiana, stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Bulldogs also received valuable production from their bench. Caroline Dotsey, a 6-2 forward from Havertown, Pennsylvania, scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds in just 17 minutes. Saniya Jackson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, added 10 points and four rebounds in 37 minutes, while fellow Fort Wayne native Nevaeh Jackson contributed seven points off the bench.
For Northern Kentucky, Karina Bystry was the lone bright spot on offense. The 5-9 guard from Englewood, Tennessee, led the Norse with 15 points, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jamaya Thomas, an Indianapolis native, provided nine points, four rebounds and a block in 23 minutes.
The game’s flow was dictated early by Butler’s aggressive start. The Bulldogs opened the scoring with a Caroline Dotsey layup just 12 seconds in and never relinquished the lead. A 10-0 run midway through the first quarter, capped by another Dotsey jumper and a Mallory Miller layup, stretched the lead to 13-2 and forced Northern Kentucky into a difficult offensive rhythm for the remainder of the half.
The Norse will look for their first win when they return home to host Toledo on Wednesday. Butler, meanwhile, faces a stiff in-state test on the road against Indiana, also on Wednesday.
