Columbia at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a season opener defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Columbia Lions outlasted the Butler Bulldogs 74-69 in overtime in a nonconference women’s basketball game Friday night at a sparsely attended Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The Lions, who led for much of the contest, saw a late regulation lead slip away before dominating the extra period to secure the road victory. The game was a stark contrast in styles, with Columbia’s relentless defense forcing 28 Butler turnovers, which ultimately proved the difference.

Neither team shot the ball efficiently. Columbia finished 28 of 70 from the floor, a 40 percent clip, while Butler was more accurate at 50 percent on 28-of-56 shooting. However, the Lions’ ability to generate extra possessions through 17 offensive rebounds and a season-high 15 steals negated the Bulldogs’ superior field goal percentage. Columbia also attempted 22 free throws, making 13, compared to Butler’s 9-of-14 performance from the line.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair through the first three quarters. Columbia held a 29-27 lead at halftime and maintained a slim 45-42 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Lions appeared poised to close out the game in regulation, but Butler mounted a final charge to tie the score and force overtime.

In the extra period, Columbia’s defense tightened further, holding the Bulldogs to just nine points while the Lions scored 14 to pull away for the five-point win.

Riley Weiss led all scorers for Columbia, pouring in 27 points while adding five rebounds. Perri Page recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, also contributing significantly to the defensive effort with a game-high four steals. Susie Rafiu provided a crucial inside presence, scoring 13 points.

Butler was led by a balanced scoring attack. Nevaeh Jackson, a Fort Wayne native, scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lily Zeinstra and Kennedy Langham each added 13 points for the Bulldogs.

The victory marks a successful start for Columbia, which begins its season 1-0. Butler, which defeated Wright State in its opener on Monday, falls to 1-1.

Columbia’s next game is on the road against Ohio on Sunday. Butler will look to rebound at home against Central Michigan next Wednesday.
