San Diego State Edges Colorado State in Defensive Mountain West Battle
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the San Diego State Aztecs escaped Moby Arena with a 46-44 victory over the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West women’s basketball clash on Wednesday night.
The game, witnessed by 5,582 fans, was a testament to tenacity over talent as both teams endured profound offensive droughts. San Diego State improved to 16-3 overall, while Colorado State fell to 17-5.
The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded in the final chaotic seconds. Leading 44-41 with seven seconds remaining, San Diego State’s Nala Williams was fouled and sent to the line. She missed the first free throw but calmly sank the second, pushing the lead to four points and forcing Colorado State to seek a three-pointer to tie.
On the ensuing inbound, the Rams’ Lexus Bargesser turned the ball over, effectively sealing the outcome. A final desperation heave was irrelevant as the Aztecs secured the low-scoring road win.
The game’s defining characteristic was a nightmarish first half for both offenses. San Diego State established an early 11-0 lead and held Colorado State without a field goal for the game’s first nine minutes and 24 seconds. The Rams missed their first 14 shot attempts before finally connecting. Despite this, the Aztecs could not pull away, hampered by their own inefficiency. They managed only four points in the entire second quarter, allowing Colorado State to claw back to within 18-14 at halftime.
Both teams shot under 35% from the field. San Diego State finished at 34% on 17-of-50 shooting, while Colorado State was slightly worse at 30.5% on 18-of-59. The three-point line was a particular area of futility; the Aztecs went 0-for-12, and the Rams were only marginally better at 2-for-13.
San Diego State’s victory was forged on the glass and at the free-throw line late. They dominated the offensive boards 10-3, generating crucial second-chance opportunities. They also attempted 21 free throws to Colorado State’s 10, making just enough (12) to survive. Colorado State’s defense was otherwise stellar, forcing 14 turnovers while committing only six and recording seven steals and six blocks.
Kaelyn Hamilton led all scorers with 15 points for San Diego State, providing essential offense in a game where points were at a premium. Alyssa Jackson anchored the interior with 11 rebounds. For Colorado State, Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake, Michigan, scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had two blocks. Brooke Carlson of Batavia, Illinois, added 13 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
The win continued a strong run for San Diego State in conference play. The Aztecs will host Nevada on Saturday. Colorado State, which had been projected as a slight favorite by advanced metrics, looks to rebound on the road at UNLV, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in San Diego on Feb. 11.
