Sacred Heart Routs Canisius in Metro Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Sacred Heart women’s basketball team used a dominant first quarter to set the tone and never looked back, cruising to a 76-55 victory over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Thursday night at Koessler Athletic Center.
The Pioneers (9-10, 6-4 MAAC) raced out to a 23-12 lead after the opening period, capitalizing on early Golden Griffins turnovers and establishing an efficient offensive rhythm that lasted the entire game. Sacred Heart’s early burst proved insurmountable for a Canisius squad that struggled to find consistent scoring all night, falling to 3-15 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Sacred Heart’s offensive execution was the story, as they scored 76 points on just 64 possessions for an elite offensive rating of 118.7. They shot 50% from the field, connecting on 27 of 54 attempts, and were an effective 7 of 16 from three-point range. The Pioneers also took care of the ball, committing only nine turnovers while forcing 18 from the Golden Griffins.
Canisius, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of just 79.0, scoring 55 points on 70 possessions. The Golden Griffins shot 40% overall but were ice-cold from beyond the arc, making only 1 of 10 three-point attempts. They were efficient at the free-throw line, hitting 12 of 14, but could not generate enough high-percentage looks to mount a serious challenge.
The most important stretch of the game was unquestionably the opening quarter, where Sacred Heart built its decisive double-digit cushion. The Pioneers opened with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Nalyce Dudley of Norwich, Connecticut, assisted by Sophie Nascimento. Sacred Heart’s defense was equally impactful early, with Emma Kirby of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, recording a block and the team forcing several Canisius turnovers that led to transition opportunities. By the time the period ended, the Pioneers had established a comfortable 11-point lead and full control of the contest’s tempo.
Sophie Nascimento, a guard from Scarsdale, New York, led Sacred Heart with 14 points and six assists in 29 minutes, directing the offense with precision. Amelia Wood of Wynantskill, New York, added 15 points, three assists and two blocks. The Pioneers also received significant contributions from their depth, as Nalyce Dudley scored 12 points, Esther Kursite of London, England, added 10 points off the bench, and Emma Kirby chipped in nine points and two blocks.
Canisius was led by 14 points apiece from Yasmine Djibril of Montreal, Canada, and Shariah Gailes of Brooklyn, Ohio. Franka Wittenberg of Hildesheim, Germany, added 10 points and three assists. Despite the balanced scoring, the Golden Griffins could not overcome their perimeter shooting woes and the turnover disparity.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Sacred Heart, which also defeated Canisius 77-61 on Jan. 3. A crowd of 425 at the Koessler Athletic Center saw the Pioneers win their second straight game and move above .500 in MAAC play.
Sacred Heart will look to continue its momentum on the road Saturday at Niagara. Canisius will aim to regroup at home Saturday against Fairfield.
