Fairfield Stags Dominate Niagara Purple Eagles in MAAC Women’s Basketball
SANBORN, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Fairfield Stags delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, dismantling the Niagara Purple Eagles 81-51 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a sparsely attended Gallagher Center.
From the opening tip, Fairfield established control, leveraging a suffocating defensive effort that crippled Niagara’s offense for long stretches. The Stags improved to 16-3 overall and remained near the top of the MAAC standings, while Niagara’s season of struggle continued, falling to 0-18.
The decisive sequence of the game arrived in the second quarter, where Fairfield transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. Leading 15-14 after a back-and-forth first period, the Stags unleashed a 23-3 blitz over the next ten minutes. Their defense was the catalyst, forcing the Purple Eagles into a series of rushed shots, turnovers and shot-clock violations. Niagara managed just a single field goal in the quarter, a layup by Talia Dial with 7:57 remaining, and went scoreless for the final 7:37 of the half.
During that crushing run, Fairfield guard Kaety L’Amoreaux was virtually unstoppable. The 5-foot-6 sophomore from Endwell, New York, scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the period, including three consecutive three-pointers that stretched the lead from four points to 20 in a span of just over two minutes. Her back-to-back triples, assisted by Jillian Huerter and Janelle Brown respectively, pushed the advantage to 27-14 and prompted a Niagara timeout that failed to stem the tide.
By halftime, Fairfield led 41-17, and the outcome was effectively sealed. The Stags’ offensive rating of 106.9 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Niagara’s anemic 66.3, illustrating the chasm in efficiency. Fairfield shot 17 for 42 from three-point range, while Niagara managed just 2 for 10. The Stags also forced 22 turnovers, converting them into 28 points.
L’Amoreaux’s stellar night included seven assists in just 23 minutes of action, continuing a torrid scoring stretch for the Stags’ top star. She was complemented by Meghan Andersen, a 6-1 forward from Wantagh, New York, who added 14 points. Keyarah Gregory provided 11 points off the bench for Fairfield.
Niagara, searching for its first win, was led by Tyasia Freeman’s 12 points. Talia Dial scored 13 and Katarina Veljovic added 12 for the Purple Eagles, but their efforts were overshadowed by the team’s offensive struggles and inability to handle Fairfield’s defensive pressure.
The Stags maintained their intensity after halftime, never allowing Niagara closer than 21 points. The lead ballooned to as many as 35 in the fourth quarter as Fairfield’s reserves saw extended action.
Fairfield, which defeated Niagara 98-42 just three weeks prior, has now won four consecutive games and nine of its last ten. The Stags will look to continue their momentum on the road Saturday at Canisius. Niagara, still in pursuit of that elusive first victory, will host Sacred Heart on Saturday.
The game unfolded as statistical models predicted, with Fairfield entering as an overwhelming favorite with a win probability projected at over 99 percent. The Stags lived up to that billing with a comprehensive performance that highlighted their status as a conference contender and exposed the deep challenges facing the rebuilding Purple Eagles.
