Northern Kentucky at Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio (Interstat) — Two Horizon League women’s basketball teams on contrasting trajectories will meet Saturday when the surging Northern Kentucky Norse visit the struggling Wright State Raiders at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

Northern Kentucky (9-11, 5-2 Horizon) enters riding a six-game winning streak, its longest in conference play in recent seasons. The Norse are coming off a 63-55 home victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday. Wright State (6-13, 1-6), meanwhile, looks to snap a four-game skid after a 78-67 overtime loss to Youngstown State that same night.

The matchup features two of the league’s top scorers in dynamic form. Northern Kentucky’s charge is led by guard Karina Bystry, who has averaged 17.9 points during the winning streak. She dropped 20 points in the win over Milwaukee and scored 24 in a road victory at Robert Morris on Jan. 10.

Wright State will counter with guard Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, who has been a bright spot during the difficult stretch. She is averaging 15.8 points over her last five games, including a 17-point performance against Youngstown State.

While the Norse have found a rhythm, particularly on defense where they have held four of their last six opponents under 60 points, the Raiders have struggled to close games. Three of their last four losses have been by single digits or in overtime.

The Raiders won the first meeting last season, but the Norse took the rematch. With Northern Kentucky currently tied for second in the league standings and Wright State near the bottom, this game represents a critical pivot point for both squads’ conference ambitions.

Saturday’s contest will tip off at 2 p.m. EST. Following this game, Northern Kentucky visits IU Indy on Jan. 21, while Wright State hosts Robert Morris on Jan. 25.
