Utah State at Fresno State

Preview: Utah State Aggies at Fresno State Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in Mountain West play will meet Wednesday when the Fresno State Bulldogs host the Utah State Aggies in a women’s basketball matchup at Save Mart Center.

Both squads enter with sub-.500 overall records. Utah State (6-9) has lost three straight, including a heartbreaking 73-72 defeat to San Diego State on Saturday. Fresno State (7-9) also looks to rebound after a 71-64 non-conference road loss at Grand Canyon that same day.

The Aggies will lean on guard Jamisyn Heaton, who is coming off an 18-point performance in the narrow loss to the Aztecs. Heaton has been a key scorer, erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in a win over San Jose State on Dec. 31. Support comes from Sophie Sene and Karyn Sanford, who combined for 30 points against San Diego State.

Fresno State counters with guard Jaisa Gamble, who led the team with 14 points at Grand Canyon. Gamble has been a consistent minutes leader, playing 36 minutes or more in three of her last six outings. Danae Powell, who scored 17 points last game, provides additional backcourt firepower.

The Bulldogs have found success at home recently, including a 67-52 conference win over San Jose State on Jan. 7. Utah State’s recent struggles have come on the road, with losses at UNLV and Nevada to open January.

This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Logan, Utah, on Feb. 15.

Wednesday’s contest tips off a critical stretch for both programs as they navigate the conference schedule. For Utah State, it’s a chance to snap its skid. For Fresno State, it’s an opportunity to build a home winning streak and climb the Mountain West standings.
