Fresno State Women Dominate Utah State in Mountain West Matchup

FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Emilia Long scored 21 points and orchestrated a dominant Fresno State offense as the Bulldogs overwhelmed Utah State 86-56 in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Save Mart Center.

The contest was effectively decided in a decisive first quarter, where Fresno State established a commanding lead from which the Aggies never recovered. The Bulldogs opened the game on a 9-2 run and closed the period with a 14-4 burst, taking a 24-14 lead into the second quarter. Long, a 5-foot-9 guard from Port Angeles, Washington, was the catalyst throughout, adding five assists and setting the tone for a fluid Fresno State attack.

The Bulldogs’ offensive efficiency was staggering. They scored 86 points on 72 possessions, an offensive rating of 119.0, and shot 48 percent from the field. Equally impactful was their work on the glass, where they outrebounded Utah State 49-28 and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second-chance points.

Utah State, which fell to 6-10 overall, struggled to find any consistent rhythm. The Aggies turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 23 Fresno State points, and managed only four assists against the Bulldogs’ disruptive defense. Elise Livingston led Utah State with 16 points, while Jamisyn Heaton added 15. The Aggies shot just 40 percent from the field and a costly 59 percent from the free-throw line.

Fresno State, which improved to 8-9, saw its lead balloon to 30 points in the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored the Aggies 26-17 in the period, with Long and forward Djessira Diawara combining for 15 points in the quarter. Diawara, a 6-3 post player from Bamako, Mali, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench.

The Bulldogs’ depth was a significant factor, with four players scoring in double figures. Ava Marr scored 16 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Danae Powell and Jaisa Gamble each added 13 points. Fresno State also tallied 11 steals and 11 assists, showcasing a balanced and aggressive performance.

For Utah State, the loss extended a difficult stretch in conference play, dropping their Mountain West record to 1-4. The Aggies have now lost four of their last five games, with the lone win coming against San Jose State. Their offensive struggles were encapsulated by an offensive rating of just 76.2, as they failed to crack 60 points for the fourth time this season.

Fresno State, meanwhile, evened its conference record at 2-2 and gained momentum following a road loss to Grand Canyon last Saturday. The Bulldogs’ victory was their most complete of the conference schedule, leveraging superior size, shooting, and ball movement to control the game from start to finish.

The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred late in the first quarter, extinguishing any early Utah State hope. After the Aggies closed to within 13-10, Fresno State unleashed a 13-2 run over the final 3:38 of the period. Long bookended the run with a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper, while Diawara scored twice inside. The surge gave the Bulldogs a double-digit lead they would only expand, setting the stage for a lopsided evening.
