Wyoming at Boise State
Preview: Wyoming Women Set for Uphill Battle at Boise State
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — A struggling Wyoming team aims to snap a five-game skid when it visits a surging Boise State squad in a Mountain West women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Taco Bell Arena.
The Wyoming Cowgirls (4-11, 0-3 MW) enter with the conference’s worst record and are coming off a demoralizing 82-53 home loss to UNLV on Saturday. Their last victory was a 23-point win over San Jose State on Dec. 17.
In contrast, the Boise State Broncos (12-5, 2-1) have won three of their last four, including a tight 62-59 victory over Colorado State last time out. They have protected their home court well, going 8-2 in Boise this season.
The game features a stark contrast in individual momentum. Wyoming will lean on forward Jane Rumpf, who is coming off a standout performance in the loss to UNLV, recording 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. However, her production has been inconsistent during the losing streak.
Boise State counters with the hot hand of guard Tatum Thompson, who is averaging 19.3 points over her last four games. She exploded for 25 points in 37 minutes against Colorado State and has posted two double-doubles in recent weeks.
Wyoming’s challenges are multifaceted. The Cowgirls have failed to reach 55 points in four of their five consecutive losses and will face a Broncos defense allowing just 62.2 points per game at home. Rebounding and ball security, areas of struggle during the slump, will be critical against a disciplined Boise State team.
For the Broncos, maintaining their offensive rhythm while integrating secondary scorers like Dani Bayes and Libby Hutton around Thompson will be key. They have shown vulnerability against athletic opponents, as seen in losses to Grand Canyon and San Diego State, but Wyoming has not displayed similar firepower.
This marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 14 in Laramie, Wyoming.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST Wednesday at Taco Bell Arena.
