Boise State Broncos Dominate Wyoming Cowboys in Mountain West Matchup
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — The Boise State Broncos delivered a dominant wire-to-wire victory, overwhelming the Wyoming Cowgirls 77-40 in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Taco Bell Arena.
From the opening tip, the Broncos established control, sprinting to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The 37-point margin of victory underscored a comprehensive performance in which Boise State excelled in nearly every facet of the game before an announced crowd of 1,861.
The most critical phase of the contest was its inception. Boise State’s stifling defense set the tone immediately, forcing Wyoming into a series of missed shots and turnovers. The Cowgirls opened the game 1-for-10 from the field with three turnovers in the first five minutes, allowing the Broncos to build a quick 11-2 advantage. That early cushion proved insurmountable for a Wyoming team that struggled offensively all evening. The Cowgirls’ first field goal, a turnaround jumper by Jane Rumpf, did not come until the 7:09 mark of the opening period, by which time Boise State had already built a firm lead.
Boise State’s offensive efficiency was starkly superior. The Broncos shot 46.8 percent from the field and a blistering 52.9 percent from three-point range, connecting on 9 of 17 attempts. Wyoming, by contrast, managed only 32.1 percent shooting overall and a frigid 16 percent from beyond the arc, making just 4 of 25. The Broncos also capitalized on Wyoming’s mistakes, scoring 16 points off 14 Cowgirl turnovers, while Wyoming managed only 6 points off Boise State’s 9 giveaways.
Dani Bayes, a junior guard from Brisbane, Australia, led all scorers with 15 points and added three assists in 29 minutes for Boise State. She was instrumental in the early surge. Kenna Garza, a freshman post from Pocatello, Idaho, provided a major spark off the bench, scoring all 13 of her points in the second half, including three three-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped blow the game open. Izzie Harms contributed 11 points, while Tatum Thompson filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Wyoming, which has now lost five straight games, was led by Malene Pedersen’s 14 points. Heidur Karlsdottir of Laugavellir, Iceland, provided a defensive presence with three blocks and six rebounds, but the Cowgirls’ offensive struggles were pervasive. The team recorded only two assists against 14 turnovers and posted an offensive rating of just 61.6 points per 100 possessions.
After taking a 38-20 lead into halftime, Boise State saw its offense stall slightly in the third quarter, scoring only 12 points. However, their defense maintained the pressure, limiting Wyoming to 11 points and keeping the lead at 19. Any thought of a Cowgirl rally was extinguished in the final period, as the Broncos erupted for 27 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range to turn the game into a rout.
The victory improved Boise State to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West play, while Wyoming fell to 4-12 and 0-5. The Broncos showcased a balanced attack, with 30 points in the paint and a 9-of-15 performance from the free-throw line. Wyoming’s only consistent success came inside, scoring 18 paint points, but it was nowhere near enough to counter Boise State’s offensive firepower.
The game was a clear demonstration of Boise State’s superior execution and depth. The Broncos’ ability to impose their will from the opening minutes, combined with a sustained defensive effort and a late scoring burst, handed Wyoming its most lopsided defeat of the conference season. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Laramie on Feb. 14.
