Army Women Pull Away From Holy Cross in Patriot League Matchup

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Army women’s basketball team used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from Holy Cross and secure a 61-46 victory in a Patriot League matchup Wednesday night at Christl Arena.

The Black Knights, improving to 13-3 overall, broke open a tight contest by outscoring the Crusaders 23-14 in the pivotal third period, turning a four-point halftime edge into a commanding 13-point lead entering the final quarter. Army’s defense stifled Holy Cross throughout the second half, holding the visitors to 26 points after the break.

Holy Cross, which fell to 9-7, kept pace early in a defensive struggle. The Crusaders led 12-11 after a first quarter that featured six lead changes and neither team shooting above 30 percent from the field. Army found a slight rhythm in the second quarter, building a 27-20 advantage by halftime, but the game remained within reach for the visitors.

The complexion of the game changed decisively after halftime. Army opened the third quarter on a 13-4 run, fueled by its interior presence and transition play. The Black Knights shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter while clamping down defensively, forcing seven Holy Cross turnovers which led to 11 points. The Crusaders never recovered, as Army’s lead ballooned to as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Kya Smith, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, led all scorers with 18 points for Army, adding three steals in 31 minutes. Her efficiency inside was a catalyst for the Black Knights’ offensive flow. Reganne Reardon of Chicago provided a crucial boost off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds, including several key baskets during the game-breaking third-quarter run. The Army backcourt of Brooke Wilson and Camryn Tade facilitated the offense, each contributing five assists, while Tade finished with six points, three assists and two blocks.

Holy Cross was led by Meg Cahalan of Middletown, New Jersey, who scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Guard Kaitlyn Flanagan from Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, added seven points and five assists, but the Crusaders’ offense struggled against Army’s defensive pressure, committing 21 total turnovers which Army converted into 24 points.

The most important sequence of the game occurred between the 6:39 and 3:13 marks of the third quarter. With Army holding a narrow 34-30 lead, the Black Knights embarked on a 10-2 run. Smith initiated the spurt with a layup and a free throw, Reardon hit a jumper and a pair of free throws, and Reese Ericson capped it with a pull-up jump shot to give Army a 44-32 advantage. Holy Cross called a timeout but could not stem the tide, as Army continued to extend its lead, effectively putting the game out of reach by the start of the fourth quarter.

Defense was the cornerstone of Army’s victory. The Black Knights held Holy Cross to just 28.6 percent shooting from the field for the game and a meager 18.2 percent from three-point range. Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly provided defensive resistance for Holy Cross with three blocks, but the Crusaders could not sustain any offensive consistency against Army’s disciplined scheme.

The announced attendance was 300. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Army entered the game with a 70.20 percent probability to win.

Holy Cross looks to rebound at home against Lafayette on Saturday. Army continues its Patriot League schedule on the road at American, also on Saturday.
