Pepperdine at San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Pepperdine Waves look to rebound from a tough overtime loss when they visit the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Pepperdine (10-6) enters the contest after falling 83-78 in overtime to Loyola Marymount on Thursday. The Waves had won three of their previous four games prior to that defeat. San Diego (6-12) seeks to end a five-game skid, most recently a 68-62 loss at Seattle on Thursday.

The game features two of the conference’s top scorers in a backcourt duel. Pepperdine’s Elli Guiney is averaging 17.1 points per game in conference play, coming off a 42-minute, 22-point performance against LMU. Over her last five games, the guard is averaging 16.6 points.

She will be matched by San Diego’s Kylie Ray, who has been a bright spot during the Toreros’ slump. Ray is averaging 21.2 points over her last five contests, including a 29-point outing at Pacific on Dec. 30. She scored 23 points and dished five assists in the loss to Seattle.

Pepperdine holds a clear advantage in the standings, but has struggled on the road this season with a 2-4 record away from home. San Diego is 4-4 at home. The Waves rely on a balanced attack behind Guiney, with Bella Green (15 points vs. LMU) and Lina Falk providing secondary scoring.

San Diego, meanwhile, has leaned heavily on Ray, who has accounted for nearly 30% of the team’s scoring during its losing streak. Finding consistent support from players like Hallie Rhodes and Malia Tharpe will be critical for the Toreros to pull an upset.

This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Malibu on Feb. 19.

Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. PST Saturday.
