San Diego Edges Pepperdine in Defensive Struggle
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and missed opportunities, the San Diego Toreros mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to edge the Pepperdine Waves 54-51 in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The contest, played before an announced crowd of 541, saw Pepperdine squander a 12-point halftime lead as its offense stalled completely in the final period. The Waves managed only seven points in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for a critical stretch of over six minutes that allowed San Diego to seize control.
Pepperdine established an early advantage with a 12-6 first quarter, capitalizing on a sloppy start by the Toreros that included five turnovers in the opening minutes. The Waves extended their lead to 27-23 by halftime, but the second half told a different story.
San Diego guard Hallie Rhodes, a junior from Keller, Texas, spearheaded the Toreros’ resurgence. She scored a game-high 16 points, including a crucial pull-up jumper and a late three-pointer that gave San Diego its first multi-possession lead in the fourth quarter. Her backcourt mate, Kylie Ray of La Crescenta, California, added 14 points and was instrumental in the final frame.
The most pivotal sequence came with under two minutes to play and Pepperdine clinging to a 51-50 lead. San Diego’s Olivia Owens, who had six points and multiple key defensive plays, stole the ball from Pepperdine’s Shorna Preston. Owens then converted the steal into a driving layup to put the Toreros ahead 52-51, a lead they would not relinquish.
Pepperdine had several chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute but came up empty. A turnover by Lina Falk with 54 seconds left was followed by a missed pull-up jumper by Meghan Fiso. After San Diego’s Malia Tharpe made two free throws to extend the lead to 54-51 with 50 seconds remaining, Pepperdine’s final attempt, a three-pointer from Seleh Harmon as time expired, missed the mark.
Fiso, a guard from Seattle, led Pepperdine with 16 points. Falk, a forward from Wolfsburg, Germany, contributed 12 points for the Waves. Preston, of Christchurch, New Zealand, facilitated the offense with five assists but was limited to seven points.
The game was a defensive struggle, with both teams shooting under 40% from the floor. Points in the paint were nearly even, with San Diego holding a slight 34-32 edge, while Pepperdine scored 14 points off turnovers compared to San Diego’s 12.
With the victory, San Diego improved its season record to 7-12 overall. Pepperdine, which entered the game as a statistical favorite according to Interstat’s ELO system, fell to 10-7. The Waves have now lost two consecutive conference games, including an overtime defeat to Loyola Marymount on Thursday.
San Diego next travels to face Gonzaga on Jan. 17. Pepperdine returns home to host Pacific on Jan. 15. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Malibu on Feb. 19.
