North Dakota State at Denver
DENVER (Interstat) — A surging North Dakota State team aims to continue its dominant start when it visits a Denver squad seeking consistency in a Summit League women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Magness Arena.
The Bison (10-2) enter conference play riding a six-game winning streak, including a 94-36 rout of Saint Mary’s on Dec. 29. North Dakota State has won those six games by an average of 27.8 points, showcasing a balanced attack. In the win over Saint Mary’s, Avery Koenen scored 19 points and Jocelyn Schiller added 12 points and four assists.
Guard Marisa Frost has been a model of steady production for NDSU, scoring exactly 14 points in each of her last four games. She is averaging 14.0 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season.
The Denver Pioneers (7-7) opened their league schedule with a 64-57 home win over North Dakota on Thursday. Their season has been marked by volatility, with results ranging from a 39-point loss at Kansas to high-scoring victories over non-Division I opponents and a 92-point outburst against MSU Denver.
The Pioneers are powered by guard Coryn Watts, who is capable of explosive performances. She scored 32 points in a win over California Baptist on Dec. 19 and 30 points against MSU Denver on Dec. 9. However, she was held to eight points in the loss at Kansas, highlighting the team’s reliance on her offensive output.
Saturday’s contest pits North Dakota State’s stifling defense, which has held opponents to 55.8 points per game during its streak, against a Denver offense that averages 68.1 points but has been inconsistent against high-major competition.
The game tips off at 2 p.m. MST Saturday. It is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams; they will play again in Fargo, North Dakota, on Jan. 29.
