Koenen Powers North Dakota State to Summit League Rout of Denver

DENVER (Interstat) — The North Dakota State women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance and rode a dominant double-double from Avery Koenen to rout Denver 81-44 in a Summit League game Saturday at Magness Arena.

The Bison, improving to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, never trailed and held the Pioneers to a season-low in points, stifling Denver’s offense from the opening tip. Denver fell to 7-8 and 1-1.

The most critical phase of the game was its inception. North Dakota State established immediate control with a suffocating defensive effort in the first quarter, setting a tone from which Denver never recovered. The Bison opened the game on a 13-0 run before Denver managed its first field goal at the 4:24 mark. During that span, the Pioneers missed their first seven shot attempts and committed three turnovers, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against NDSU’s active defense. That early drought forced Denver into a chase mode for the remaining 35 minutes, a pursuit that proved futile against the disciplined Bison.

Koenen, a 6-foot-2 junior from Montevideo, Minnesota, was the game’s standout, recording 25 points and 11 rebounds in just 29 minutes. She set the pace early, winning the opening tip and scoring six points in the first quarter as NDSU built a 19-8 lead. Her interior presence was overwhelming, as she shot 9 of 13 from the field and a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line.

She was complemented by guard Jocelyn Schiller of Grand Forks, North Dakota, who added 15 points and four assists. Marisa Frost contributed 10 points and four assists, and Karrington Asp chipped in 10 points off the bench. The Bison shot 55.9 percent from the field overall and were efficient from the line, making 11 of 13 free throws.

Denver, conversely, was plagued by cold shooting and ball security issues. The Pioneers shot 39.6 percent from the floor and a mere 18.2 percent from three-point range. They also committed 14 turnovers, which North Dakota State converted into 19 points. The Bison’s defensive pressure was quantified by an offensive rating of just 70.0 for Denver on 63 possessions.

Laia Monclova of Mallorca, Spain, led Denver with 15 points, but needed 17 shots to reach that total. Karolina Padilla added eight points. The Pioneers’ offense was disjointed throughout, managing only eight points in both the first and third quarters. Anna Rosenberger provided a defensive bright spot with four rebounds and two blocks.

North Dakota State’s offensive balance was evident as they steadily expanded their lead each quarter, culminating in a 26-point fourth quarter to seal the lopsided victory. The Bison held a 38-24 advantage in points in the paint and out-rebounded Denver 34-23. Their nine steals, led by two each from Koenen and Schiller, fueled their transition game and disrupted Denver’s offensive sets.

The game’s outcome aligned with statistical projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given North Dakota State a 92.5 percent probability to win.

North Dakota State will look to continue its strong start to league play when it hosts Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday. Denver will hit the road for its next contest, facing Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Thursday.
