Richmond Routs Saint Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies and secure an 80-60 victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Reilly Center.
The Spiders, who improved to 12-4 overall, turned a 10-point halftime lead into a commanding 23-point advantage by holding the Bonnies to just nine points in the decisive third period. Richmond’s offensive efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc, proved too much for a Saint Bonaventure squad that fell to 10-5.
The game was closely contested early. Saint Bonaventure’s Laycee Drake opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and the Bonnies kept pace through the first quarter, trailing just 20-15. The second quarter saw similar back-and-forth action, with Richmond’s Sam Dewey providing a spark off the bench with eight points in the period to help the Spiders maintain a 38-30 halftime lead.
The complexion of the game changed entirely after halftime. Richmond’s defense intensified, forcing several Saint Bonaventure turnovers and converting them into quick offense. The Spiders opened the third quarter on a 15-3 run, fueled by 3-pointers from Tierra Simon, Maggie Doogan and Ally Sweeney. Saint Bonaventure managed only three field goals in the entire quarter, shooting 3 of 14 from the floor as Richmond built a 60-39 lead heading into the final period.
Saint Bonaventure showed resilience in the fourth quarter, outscoring Richmond 21-20 behind 11 points from Aaliyah Parker, but the deficit was far too large to overcome. The Bonnies never got closer than 17 points in the final minutes.
Richmond’s offensive balance was key. Six Spiders scored at least seven points, led by Maggie Doogan’s 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sam Dewey added 16 points off the bench, while Rachel Ullstrom contributed 13 points and five rebounds. Alicia Newell orchestrated the offense with six assists to go with seven points and seven rebounds, and Ally Sweeney also dished out six assists alongside 11 points.
The Spiders shot 50.8% from the field and an impressive 43.8% from 3-point range, making 14 of 32 attempts. Their offensive rating of 117.7 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Saint Bonaventure’s 87.8. Richmond also controlled the paint, outscoring the Bonnies 34-20.
Saint Bonaventure was led by Aaliyah Parker’s 18 points and six rebounds. Laycee Drake finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. The Bonnies struggled to find consistent offense outside of their top two scorers, shooting 43.9% overall and 33.3% from deep.
The most important part of the game was Richmond’s overwhelming third-quarter performance, where they outscored Saint Bonaventure 22-9. This stretch, defined by stifling defense and a barrage of 3-pointers, transformed a competitive conference matchup into a lopsided affair, allowing the Spiders to cruise to their 12th win of the season.
Attendance at the Reilly Center was 427.
Richmond returns home to face Fordham on Wednesday. Saint Bonaventure travels to face Duquesne on the same night.
