Miami Outlasts Virginia Tech in Overtime ACC Thriller
BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Ra Shaya Kyle scored 23 points and dominated the paint, and the Miami Hurricanes closed with a 13-5 run in overtime to upset the Virginia Tech Hokies 75-67 in an Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum.
The Hurricanes (10-4, 1-0 ACC) erased a 12-point second-half deficit and overcame a sluggish offensive start to hand the Hokies (11-4, 0-1) a costly conference-opening loss on their home floor. Virginia Tech had been an 81% favorite according to analytics and entered as a 4.5-point favorite.
The most critical sequence of the game came in the final two minutes of regulation, with Miami trailing 62-60. After a Virginia Tech turnover, Gal Raviv sank a stepback 3-pointer to put Miami ahead 63-62 with 1:43 remaining. Following a Hokies miss, Raviv hit a pull-up jumper to extend the lead to 65-62 with just over a minute left. Virginia Tech’s Kilah Freelon answered with a layup to cut it to one, but Miami had a chance to seal it. Kyle’s layup attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game to overtime tied at 65.
Miami carried that momentum into the extra period, scoring the first six points. Kyle opened overtime with a layup, followed by a Danielle Osho layup assisted by Kyle. After a Virginia Tech basket, Kyle scored again inside and completed a three-point play after being fouled, pushing the lead to 72-66. The Hokies, who managed only five points in overtime, went scoreless for the final 2:19 as Miami sealed the game at the free-throw line.
Virginia Tech controlled the first half, leading 33-19 at halftime after holding Miami to just seven points in the second quarter. The Hokies extended their lead to 47-35 midway through the third quarter before the Hurricanes began their methodical comeback. A 20-point third quarter for Miami cut the deficit to 51-45 entering the final period.
Kyle, a 6-foot-6 center from Marion, Indiana, was the focal point, playing 38 minutes and adding two assists and a block. Her presence inside was the foundation of Miami’s decisive 46-24 advantage in points in the paint. Raviv, a guard from Netanya, Israel, played 41 minutes and scored 16 points, including the crucial late three and jumper in regulation. Amarachi Kimpson added 14 points for the Hurricanes.
Virginia Tech was led by Carleigh Wenzel with 16 points. Kilah Freelon scored 13 and Mel Daley added 12. Point guard Mackenzie Nelson dished out eight assists but the Hokies were plagued by 18 turnovers, which Miami converted into 18 points.
The Hurricanes, who entered the game having won three of their last four, shot the ball more efficiently in the second half and overtime to finish at a higher percentage from the floor than the Hokies. Virginia Tech’s shooting went cold late, particularly from beyond the arc.
A crowd of 4,617 watched as Miami secured its first ACC win of the season, while Virginia Tech must regroup after seeing a double-digit lead evaporate. The total points scored, 142, went under the pregame over/under line of 138.5.
Miami returns home to face Clemson on Sunday. Virginia Tech travels to face Louisville, also on Sunday.
