TCU Women Stay Perfect, Rout BYU in Big 12 Opener
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — The Texas Christian Lady Frogs, the nation’s last remaining undefeated team in NCAA Division I women’s basketball, passed their toughest test of the young season with a commanding defensive performance, stifling the BYU Cougars 72-48 on Wednesday night at the Marriott Center.
In a matchup of Big 12 contenders, TCU’s suffocating defense was the story. The Lady Frogs held a BYU team averaging over 73 points per game to a season-low output, forcing 14 turnovers and limiting the Cougars to a frigid 30% shooting from the field, including just 5 of 23 from three-point range. BYU’s offensive rating of 67.9 points per 100 possessions underscored the struggle against TCU’s length and discipline.
The game’s decisive stretch came early. TCU, led by the dominant interior presence of 6-foot-7 center Clara Silva of Portugal, established control in the first quarter. Silva won the opening tip and quickly asserted herself, scoring six of her team-high 15 points in the period. While BYU’s Sydney Benally kept the Cougars close with early three-pointers, TCU’s offensive execution, fueled by point guard Olivia Miles’ playmaking, created consistent high-percentage looks. The Lady Frogs closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by a Miles three-pointer, to take a 23-18 lead.
That momentum carried into a second quarter that effectively decided the contest. TCU’s defense locked down completely, holding BYU to just nine points on 3-of-15 shooting. The Cougars endured a scoring drought of over five minutes, managing only a pair of Lara Rohkohl free throws during that span. Meanwhile, TCU, despite its own offensive inconsistencies in the period, steadily extended its lead. A key three-pointer from Veronica Sheffey and a late layup from Delaney Gibb for BYU sent the teams to halftime with TCU ahead 33-27, but the tone of defensive physicality was firmly set by the visitors.
The third quarter saw TCU methodically put the game out of reach. After BYU’s Benally hit a three to pull within four at 34-30, the Lady Frogs responded with a 12-4 run. Miles, who finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists, orchestrated the offense, finding Silva inside and Taylor Bigby on the perimeter. A Silva layup off a Miles feed pushed the lead to 46-36, and TCU entered the fourth quarter leading 50-40.
Any hope of a BYU comeback was extinguished in the final frame as TCU’s defense again clamped down, allowing only eight points. The Lady Frogs opened the quarter on a 12-2 run, featuring a Donovyn Hunter three-pointer and consecutive baskets from Clara Silva, to build a 62-42 advantage with 5:57 remaining. BYU, visibly frustrated by TCU’s defensive pressure, could not mount a response, scoring just two field goals in the quarter’s final six minutes.
Silva’s 15 points and three assists anchored TCU, while Miles controlled the game’s tempo. Bigby and Marta Suárez of Spain each added 12 points. The Lady Frogs shot 45% from the field and an efficient 16 of 19 from the free-throw line.
BYU was led by Benally’s 18 points, but she needed 18 shots to reach that total. Gibb contributed 14 points and five assists, but the Cougars’ typically balanced attack was held in check. The 48 points marked BYU’s lowest scoring total since the 2022 season.
With the victory, TCU improves to 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12. The Lady Frogs will put their perfect record on the line Saturday at Utah. BYU, which saw a seven-game winning streak snapped, falls to 13-2 and 0-1 in conference play. The Cougars host Arizona State on Saturday.
The announced attendance at the Marriott Center was 3,661.
