Tulane at Texas-San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum to open American Athletic Conference play will meet when the Tulane Green Wave visit the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in a women’s basketball matchup Tuesday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

Both teams enter with identical 5-7 overall records, though their paths have differed. Tulane arrives after a 10-day break following a 70-67 overtime home loss to Mercer on Dec. 21. The Green Wave showed resilience in that game, with Dyllan Hanna scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds, and Amira Mabry posting a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards.

Hanna, a key player for Tulane, has been a defensive presence, recording multiple blocks in three of her last five games. Her offensive output, however, has fluctuated.

UTSA last played on Dec. 20, falling 70-65 at Columbia. The Roadrunners are 3-2 in their last five games, with the losses coming against power-conference opponent Baylor and a competitive Columbia squad. Their offense runs through guard Ereauna Hardaway, who is coming off a strong all-around performance of 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists against the Lions. Over a recent three-game stretch, she averaged 14 points and 7.3 assists.

The game will serve as the conference opener for both programs. Tulane’s nonconference schedule featured tough tests against LSU and Alabama. UTSA’s slate included games against Texas Tech, Baylor and Auburn.

Historically, this is a developing conference rivalry. The teams split two meetings last season, each winning on their home court.

Tipoff is set for Tuesday, Dec. 30, in San Antonio. For Tulane, it begins a stretch of three road games in four contests. UTSA opens a two-game homestand before hitting the road for four of its next five.

The matchup hinges on tempo and guard play. If Hardaway can control the game for UTSA and facilitate, the Roadrunners will have an edge. Tulane will look to Hanna and Mabry to establish an interior presence and slow Hardaway’s penetration to find a winning start to league play.
