South Alabama Routs Florida A&M in Women’s Basketball Matchup

MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — The South Alabama Jaguars used a dominant second-quarter run to pull away from the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers and secure a 75-54 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Mitchell Center.

The win improved South Alabama’s record to 6-1 on the young season, while Florida A&M’s search for its first win continues as it fell to 0-7.

The game was a defensive struggle through the opening period, with both teams combining for numerous missed shots and turnovers. South Alabama held a narrow 11-10 lead after one quarter, but the Jaguars seized control of the contest with a decisive 23-10 advantage in the second period. A key 10-0 run late in the quarter, fueled by the playmaking of Chrysta Narcisse and the scoring of Amyah Sutton, stretched the lead to 34-20 by halftime.

Florida A&M never recovered from the second-quarter deficit, as South Alabama maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. The Jaguars’ lead ballooned to as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter before settling on the final 21-point margin.

South Alabama’s offensive efficiency proved to be the difference. The Jaguars shot 43 percent from the floor and converted on six three-pointers. Florida A&M’s offensive woes were stark, as the Lady Rattlers shot just 31 percent and failed to make a three-pointer, missing all 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

Narcisse, a guard from Lafayette, Louisiana, was the engine for South Alabama, filling the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists in 30 minutes of action. Her distribution was pivotal in breaking down the Lady Rattlers’ defense.

Sutton, from Oklahoma City, led all scorers with 15 points off the bench, adding three assists and two blocks. The Jaguars also received significant contributions from Cordasia Harris of Hayneville, Alabama, who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Tamara Ortiz of Columbus, Ohio, who chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.

For Florida A&M, Shaniyah McCarthy of Apopka, Florida, led the way with 14 points and six rebounds. Tahnyjia Purifoy from Pensacola, Florida, added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Miya Giles-Jones of Fayetteville, North Carolina, nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

South Alabama capitalized on its opportunities in the paint, outscoring Florida A&M 30-20 inside. Both teams committed 17 turnovers, but the Jaguars’ superior shooting and a 9-7 advantage in steals helped them create separation.

The game was part of a challenging early-season schedule for Florida A&M, which has faced several power-conference opponents. South Alabama continues a strong start under first-year coach Yolisha Jackson, having won six of its first seven games.

Florida A&M will look for its first win when it returns home to face Jacksonville on Tuesday. South Alabama travels to face Louisiana Tech in its next contest on Thursday.
