BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Canisius Golden Griffins earned their first victory of the season Sunday, overcoming an early deficit to defeat the Mercyhurst Lakers 75-67 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game at Koessler Athletic Center.

Shariah Gailes led the Golden Griffins with 28 points and nine rebounds. Canisius used a dominant second quarter to erase a nine-point deficit, outscoring the Lakers 23-7 in the period. Despite a strong 23-point first quarter, Mercyhurst could not recover and fell to 0-6. Corniya Clay added 14 points for Canisius, which improved to 1-7.
