Mercyhurst at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — Two teams in search of their first win of the season will meet Sunday when the Mercyhurst Lakers visit the Canisius Golden Griffins in a non-conference women’s basketball game.

The matchup at Koessler Athletic Center pits a pair of winless Division I squads. Mercyhurst enters at 0-5, while Canisius sits at 0-7.

The Lakers are looking to rebound from a 112-62 road loss to Iowa State on Nov. 23. Guard Jenna Van Schaik led the team with 17 points in that contest, with Sofia Wilson adding 13 points and Lena Walz scoring 10. Mercyhurst’s offense has struggled, failing to reach 50 points in three of its five games this season.

The Golden Griffins are also coming off a lopsided defeat, falling 96-57 at Cincinnati on Nov. 23. Irene Rey Pineda was a bright spot for Canisius, scoring a team-high 14 points. Franka Wittenberg contributed 7 rebounds and 3 assists in the loss.

Both teams will view this game as a critical opportunity to break into the win column before continuing their challenging schedules. Mercyhurst hosts Robert Morris on Dec. 3, while Canisius is off until hosting Wright State on Dec. 12.
