Wildcats Dominate Second Quarter to Roll Past Owls
BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Villanova Wildcats dismantled the Temple Owls 88-58 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at The Pavilion before an announced crowd of 1,551.
The game was a tale of two halves, or more precisely, a tale of one decisive quarter. After a tightly contested first period ended with the teams knotted at 13, Villanova unleashed a devastating 31-point second quarter that effectively decided the contest. The Wildcats outscored the Owls 31-11 in the frame, turning a competitive matchup into a lopsided affair by halftime, where they led 44-24.
Villanova’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, particularly from beyond the arc. The Wildcats shot 56.5 percent from the field overall and a scorching 48 percent from 3-point range, connecting on 12 of 25 attempts. Their offensive rating of 128.8 on 68 possessions underscored a level of efficiency Temple could not match. The Owls, by contrast, managed to make only 2 of 13 shots from deep and finished with an offensive rating of 84.0.
The Wildcats’ defense was equally instrumental in the victory. They forced 18 Temple turnovers, converting those miscues into 24 points, while committing only eight turnovers of their own. Villanova also recorded 12 steals and three blocks, consistently disrupting Temple’s offensive flow.
Ryanne Allen led all scorers for Villanova, pouring in 19 points in just 24 minutes of action. The Perkasie, Pennsylvania, native also dished out a team-high six assists. Denae Carter was a force in the paint and in transition, scoring 17 points on efficient shooting and adding a steal and a block. Her Philadelphia roots added a local rivalry flavor to her impactful performance.
Jasmine Bascoe orchestrated the Villanova offense with five assists and was a pest defensively, tallying multiple steals. Brynn McCurry provided a strong inside presence with 13 points, and Brooke Bender came off the bench to add 11 points, all of which contributed to the Wildcats’ explosive second-quarter run.
For Temple, Tristen Taylor shouldered the offensive load, scoring a team-high 15 points and distributing four assists in 34 minutes. Felicia Jacobs added 10 points off the bench, and Saniyah Craig chipped in nine points, but the Owls struggled to find consistent scoring options against Villanova’s swarming defense.
The loss drops Temple to an even 3-3 on the season, while Villanova improves to 4-2. The Wildcats will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face city rival La Salle on Tuesday. Temple’s next contest is against Michigan State on Friday in The Bahamas.
