Boston College at Massachusetts

HADLEY, Mass. (Interstat) — Megan Olbrys scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Massachusetts to a 61-52 victory over Boston College in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Mullins Center.

The Minutemen remained undefeated, improving to 5-0, while the Eagles fell to 3-4.

In a game defined by defensive pressure and poor shooting, Massachusetts used a 17-9 advantage in turnovers to create separation. The Minutemen converted those Boston College miscues into 13 points and recorded 12 steals, led by Yahmani McKayle’s six.

Neither team shot well from the field. Massachusetts finished 22 of 68, a rate of 32.4 percent, while Boston College was worse, making just 19 of 59 attempts for 32.2 percent. The Minutemen held a slight edge from beyond the arc, hitting 7 of 27 compared to the Eagles’ 5 of 19.

Olbrys, a 6-foot-1 forward from Norwood, Massachusetts, was the primary offensive force, consistently finding ways to score inside. She played 36 minutes and also blocked a shot. McKayle, a 5-foot-6 guard from Queens, New York, provided a crucial all-around performance with 11 points, four rebounds, six assists and a block in 40 minutes of action.

Allie Palmieri added 14 points and five rebounds for Massachusetts, and Ayanna Franks contributed five points, eight rebounds and two assists.

For Boston College, Kayla Rolph neared a double-double with seven points and nine rebounds, while also dishing out three assists. Lily Carmody came off the bench to score nine points, and Ava McGee and Teionni McDaniel each added eight points. McGee also recorded a block.

The Eagles struggled to maintain possession, committing 17 turnovers against only five assists. Massachusetts, by contrast, tallied 12 assists on its 22 made field goals.

The Minutemen also controlled the interior, outscoring Boston College 28-18 in the paint and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds to the Eagles’ 10.

The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams trading baskets in a low-scoring first half. Massachusetts managed to build a small lead and maintained control throughout the second half, withstanding several pushes from Boston College by forcing key turnovers and getting timely baskets from Olbrys and Palmieri.

Boston College returns to action Tuesday at home against Merrimack. Massachusetts, off to its best start in recent seasons, will look to continue its winning streak Tuesday on the road at Holy Cross.
